What a day! And this day was coming to a close. I had the inability to carry my baby, however, I discovered one by accident and adopted her. The murderer who was her wicked mother was out of the picture. Destiny would be arrested and sentenced to who knows how many years for what she did to Caleb, and Alex was fired and banned from the orphanage for a year.
I was walking down the sidewalk and cradling Tamara and the new baby. By the way, I named the new member Alex. Anyone who is a true racist does not deserve to have a unique name, and the name Alex was no exception. The babies were cooing and saying Daddy over and over. I laughed and remarked to them that Daddy would be over the moon to have Alex as her legal daughter.
I remembered that the hospital ran a gift shop, and the three of us headed into the small shop and surveyed our new surroundings. Everything that you assume would be in any gift store was here. Clothes. Books. Snacks. Candy. Accessories. And yes, toys. Tamara and Alex spotted the toys in no time and gave me the puppy eyes.
I grinned as I rolled my eyes. "Tamara taught you the puppy eyes, did she not, Alex?"
Alex nodded and said, "Toys!"
"I see the toys."
"We want...toys!" Tamara proclaimed.
"Sorry, girls. We did not come for toys." I walked to the gift bags and wrapping paper and motioned to the bows. "We are going to get a special bow for Daddy. Which bow do you think that he will love?"
As I expected, the girls were uninterested in the bows and burst out crying. It was usually simple to cheer Tamara up. Just give her an item that is pink, and she will be a happy baby again. But since that I was still learning about Alex's likes and dislikes, she would be more of a challenge. I handed Tamara a pink bow and looked at Alex.
"Alex. Sweetie. What will make you happy? Your daddy does not want to see his daughter sad. He wants to see her happy."
She sniffed. "Toys."
Toys were not an option. The infants would want all the toys that they could carry.
"What is your favorite color?"
She did not answer and instead teared up.
I got a blue bow that was decorated with white cats and gave it to her. "Do you like cats? Tamara has a kitten and plays with it most of the time."
She was not intrigued by the bow and threw it on the floor. As if it were a miracle from the heavens - and it was - Caleb and Kara entered the shop and waved to me. Cal was holding hands with them and let go and ran to me.
"Mommy!" My son wrapped his arms around my legs. "I missed you, Mommy."
"The feeling is mutual," I replied. "I missed you too."
Kara and Caleb joined us, and Kara took Tamara for me. I picked the blue bow off the floor and placed it on Alex's head. I handed her to Caleb.
"Surprise, Caleb. Presenting your new daughter."
"My new daughter?" He took her into his arms.
That is when it happened. No longer was Alex a sad baby. She grabbed the bow that had been on her head and played with it.
"Awe," Caleb, Kara, and I said in unison.
"I guess that she wanted her daddy," Kara added.
"I am still confused," Caleb confessed. "How is this my daughter? She is an orphan and supposed to be in the orphanage. Unless..."
I giggled. "She is not an orphan anymore, honey."
"So that is where you and Tamara went. You were visiting the orphanage and adopted her."
"I named her Alex. Despite the fact that she just met us today, she became attached to us. I thought that she would be perfect for our family because I was already in the mood to have a baby with you, but..."
"You are right, Cindy. Alex is perfect."
"Oh, Caleb. I knew that you would be happy."
"I am more than happy. I am filled with joy." He handed Alex over to Kara. "Cindy, could you and I speak in private?"
"Sure."
He wrapped his thumb and fingers around my hand and pulled me to another section of the shop. "I have been thinking about what you said this morning and the bad news that your doctor gave us and did some research on the Internet. There is another way that we can have a child who has my DNA and your DNA."
I forced myself to not cry. "How?"
"Another girl has to carry our baby. One who has the ability to have kids. We have many female friends that we can ask."
Caleb was a genius. That is one of the things that I love about my cinnamon roll. Not only does his heart have the Holy Spirit, but he was incredibly smart. He can invent anything that was once impossible.
I hugged him ever so tightly. "That is brilliant, Caleb! But..." My face saddened. "...most of our female friends are either creatures or too young to be pregnant. Margaret and Jorgina experienced pregnancy, but they specifically said that they do not want to go through that again."
Caleb chuckled. "A friend already volunteered to help us."
"Really? Who?"
"Destiny. She wants to carry our child."
