The hospital was so white. So many people rushed around. I walked beside the stretcher, holding Devon's hand. His breathing was labored and they had him on an oxygen tank. His shoulder had stopped bleeding as much. Soon, we had him in a room. There were surgeons rushing around, preparing various tools. A police officer came over to me, "May I speak with you?" I nodded, allowing myself to be led away from Devon.
"Can you tell me what happened tonight? We found another body on the site." The officer was a blonde woman who was a quite a bit taller than me.
"I, um, well had a feeling. I just drove until I felt the need to stop. I stopped at an alley, and saw my, um, boyfriend laying on the ground covered in blood." I gulped as the officer rubbed my back. "I knelt beside him. There was a gun by his hand." I reached into my pocket and pulled out a gun that I'm sure was Devon's. I handed it to her. She took it, switching its safety latch back into place. "Then, a man came over. He pointed a gun at me, preparing to shoot." I slipped my hand into my pocket. "I shot him."
"Where is his gun then?" The officer continued rubbing my back as she called over another officer to take Devon's gun. I handed her the man's gun. She took it. "Thank you very much. What is your name?"
"Sam."
"I wasn't aware that Devon had a girlfriend." She smiled. "You'll do him some good. I'm Macy."
I sniffled, "I'm not even his girlfriend, but I didn't know how to explain it."
"What do you mean?"
"He doesn't want me around. He doesn't want me to get hurt, he says." The officer hugged me.
"Well, honey, he's doing what he feels is best, however, it is too late for that now. It's pretty much inevitable."
I'm not in trouble for shooting and killing a man, I thought. Wait, what? "Why aren't I in trouble for killing a man? I should be in jail or prison right now!"
"Hush." She rocked me. "Devon is an agent of ours. He followed that man, intending to shoot him, but he got shot first. You just did us a favor. I have a feeling that we'll be seeing you around more often." She smiled.
A doctor came in, "He's waking up."
I jolted away from the officer. I hurried into the room. Devon's eyes were fluttering open. He had a bandage and sling on. There was a lot less blood then before, for which I'm grateful. I stood beside the bed, on his good side. He blinked up at the ceiling, "Water."
The doctor handed me a cup with a straw. I put the straw to his lips. He downed the whole cup and layed back down. He looked so worn and exhausted. He looked up at me, shock coming onto his face. "What are you doing here?"
"Um-"
"I told you to stay away, you could get hurt." He looked so hurt and angry. He wasn't the only one angry.
I turned to head out of the room, throwing my voice over my shoulder, "Well that's a nice thanks for saving your life." My anger began to take over as I stomped to the door, fists clenched at my sides.
"Wait."
I paused, "What?" My teeth were clenched.
"I'm sorry." He sounded genuine.
"Yeah, me too. Sorry that I had to end a man's life or else we'd both die. Sorry I got close. Sorry that I-"
Devon cut me off, "You what?"
Macy, who I didn't even know was there, spoke up, "She shot a man with your gun."
I left the room then, ignoring Devon's calls for me to wait. I began to leave the hospital when an officer stopped me, "I'm under orders not to let you leave alone."
