It was my worst fear, my fate, all catching up to me. I cried out as Cameron jolted awake. Beside me, Maddy pulled out two guns. She took aim as another window shattered. "Duck!" I heard footsteps. People were running down the stairs to see the chaos. I looked up and spotted Devon. He hit the ground rolling as two knives were buried in the wall behind him. He looked up and met my eye, nodding at me. Behind him, Derrek came down. I jumped and ran at him, dodging knives and fists alike. I jumped on Derrek, whipping out one of my knives. I brought it down, but only succeeded in cutting off some of his hair. "Samantha stop!" Devon pulled me off of Derrek. I turned to him, slapping him. "That's Derrek, not Rogue!"
I growled, "I know damn well who he is." I threw my knife, grazing his arm. Devon held my arms down. I struggled against him, "You don't understand."
"She's right." We both looked up at Derrek. "She was the only one smart enough to know where my loyalties lie."
"What do you mean?" Devon's grip on me loosened.
I kicked out of his grasp, jumping towards Derrek as he said, "I'm Rogue's inner spy. She was right. You should have listened to her." With that, he met me midair. I kicked at his jaw. I had never fought Derrek with my true style, always letting him win, or simply going on until I was exhausted. With this in mind, I hit at his face. I heard a crack. Blood ran down Derrek's face. He growled, "You'll pay for that." He lunged. I ducked under him, stripping off my clothes to reveal my Loir suit. I slipped into the shadows. I felt a hand on my wrist and turned to find Devon.
He leaned down and whispered in my ear, "I'm sorry." GI nodded, even though he couldn't see me. Together, we slipped away from the fight.
We went up the stairs and went out a window, up to the roof. We looked around. There were cars and people hidden in the shadows. That much I could see. I kept close to the roof, moving down as silently as possible. I motioned for Devon to stay. He shook his head and grabbed my hand. Well, I guess he's coming with me then.
Gunshots went off. Devon hit the roof, flat. My heart beat rapidly. One or both of was going to die tonight, whether I liked it or not.
I heard a scream and I winced, looking behind me. Every sense was on the alert. I jumped back down into the house. Macy was backed up against the wall. Blood ran down her arm and she held a gun shakily in front of her. I pulled out mine, aiming it at the first guy I saw. My gun went off and he crumpled to the ground. The remaining two turned and face me and Devon, their guns going off. We both hit the ground as Macy's gun went off twice. They crumpled to the ground blood pouring from the backs of their heads. Macy nodded in thanks as she struggle to move through her pain. I ran over to her, pulling out a roll of bandages from by the door. We always kept some handy for such emergencies. I wrapped it up, and made her take some painkillers. When she was good, we went back downstairs to the fight.
"Backup is here." Men dressed in a dark violet poured in the doors, grabbing at other men in black. They were cuffed while other fought. I watched two men in violet go down immediately. This fight wasn't going well. Men kept pouring in, some for us, some for Rogue. Still, we fought. My knife sank into my attacker's gut, and I pulled it out and moved on. I swung my fists, gun in one hand knife in another. I looked around for any other threats.
I saw Devon, backed against the fridge, I quickly shot two of the three men surrounding him and he punched the third before kicking him in the temple. He hit the ground as I made my way to Devon's side. Devon nodded in thanks, his hand finding mine. He pulled me back into the shadows.
Devon pulled out a plastic bag. My eyes widened when I saw what was in it. Devon read the note, his eyes coming to mine, "How long have you known?"
"I got the note tonight. I've known since I decided to track Derrek." I watched him. His hand came up to his face as he hit himself.
"I've been so stupid." He hit his head against the wall. The anger in his voice, I knew, wasn't meant for me but for himself. I put my hand on his shoulder.
"Yeah, you have, but now isn't the time for that. Now, we have to fight. And we need to win. I'm not going down without a fight."
"Or at all." I smiled as he returned to his usual self, the one I fell in love with. He kissed me quickly on the lips. A crash sounded above us. I jumped and sprinted to the nearest stairway, my knife and gun ready.
I entered a bedroom to find Maddy fighting two men. She wasn't backed up against the wall yet. Her eyes widened when she saw me and she quickly ducked out. With her out of the way, I could shoot freely. I aimed my gun, letting out three bullets. All three found their marks, though one of them was unnecessary. Blood poured on the carpet. I turned away from it. The sight was sickening, and I wasn't sure how much more I could take. I jumped out the window, hitting the ground and running. More men were arriving. They poured out of the doors, all dressed in black. Not violet. I shot at them, seeing a few drop. My gun stopped shooting. Behind me, Maddy began shooting as I reloaded. I tucked my knife into its sheath, pulling, out another gun. I let loose more bullets, watching more crumple. Still., they marched. As I watched, their formation opened to reveal that it was a circle. In its center, Rogue and Derrek.
As I watched, time slowed down. A smile found its way to Rogue's face. He waved cheekily as his other hand came up. Beside him, Derrek took a knife out and aimed at Maddy beside me. No. I shot his arm. He dropped the knife as another shot rang out beside me. Someone jumped in front of me before hitting the ground. Rogue hit the ground dead as Derrek faded back into the men.
I looked down at the face at my feet. My breath caught. Devon. I knelt down beside him, my hands holding his cheeks. A knife protruded from his chest. I knew from looking at it, that this was fatal. Tears blurred my vision as I held his face in my hands. Devon smiled up at me weakly, "My princess, Annie. Always. I never got to tell you since the fight. I love you, I never meant for that to happen."
"I know," I whispered. "I love you too." He was slipping away.
I brought my lips to his, kissing him fiercely, pouring all of my emotion into the kiss. He kissed me back, weakly. I kept kissing him until he stopped kissing me back. My fingers found his pulse as he breathed his last breath into me. I kept kissing him as though I could breath life back into him. Devon. My Devon was gone. My tears fell onto his cheeks as his eyes closed. I held his limp body close to me. I lifted him, cradling him close to my chest. I whimpered, "Devon. I'm sorry. Devon. I love you, don't leave me!" I voice turned into a scream. "No! No! I can't lose you! No! Devon!" He was gone.
Everything became a blur. Lights flashed, red, blue and white. Voice called my name. Hands grabbed me, pulling me away from Devon. He couldn't be dead, he can't! He lay there, dead and unmoving as I sobbed his name out, over and over. He wouldn't wake up. Hands grabbed at me pulling me far away from my true love. Everything went black.
.........
My eyes blinked open, my heart searching for Devon. The spot beside me was empty and cold. Blood coated my weapons and the floor around me. Devon was gone. He's not coming back. Ever.
