Laughter echoed through the corridor as the trio neared the Great Hall. Once they entered, they found that their places from breakfast were still open, so they took those and Cory made a grab at the bowl of spaghetti. Cedric leaned over the table and informed Cory and Mac that Care of Magical Creatures had been cancelled due to an incident with a very annoying rat- student by the name of Draco Malfoy. Of course the rat's going to ruin the one class Cory was really looking forward to. Cory sighed and went back to focusing on his delicious meal.

He was able to get in a few mouthfuls before spotting a familiar pair of sparkling brown eyes making him swallow roughly and choke. Mac slapped his back making him regain his breath.

“Slow down Cor, I can assure you, the school’s not gonna run out of spaghetti,” Mac chided.

“Sorry, but could you please excuse me for a minute,” Cory asked politely. Not waiting for a nod, Cory abruptly stood and made his way out of the hall, heart hammering in his chest once again. Why does this keep happening? Why did Cory keep having these reactions to this boy he had little to no interactions with? Also… why did he always run from his problems?

He knew he wasn’t supposed to leave the castle unless he was going to Care of Magical Creatures, but he ignored that rule and wandered into the forest. The Forbidden Forest.

Was this one of his best ideas? No.

Was this even a remotely smart thing to do? Definitely not.

But he was doing it anyways. He always did better alone. Not that he wasn’t grateful for Cedric and Mac, but he didn’t like confiding in others. He had also only met them the day before and wasn’t about to give them information that could be used against him in the future.

Still deep in thought, Cory didn’t notice the small green creature preparing to jump on him, so it came as a shock to him when he felt little, dull claws scratching at his face. He screamed and tried to swat the thing off of his face, but to no avail. It had a firm grip on a few strands of his hair. So, Cory tried grabbing the creature. It evaded his pale hands each time and even bit him!

“STOP!” Cory yelled, scaring the creature into falling, but Cory didn’t want to kill the creature… even though it had scared him half to death, so he shouted the slowing charm that, luckily, came to mind just in time.
