roxelle pov

waking up wasn't exactly pleasant. trapped in a small metal box, no way to escape, and a big gash on the side of my leg.

roxelle.

that was all i could remember about myself. and newt. what, or who was newt? i drifted off again with the questions in mind.

i woke up again in a sheltered room. if this thing was even considered one, that is. even a bandage wrapped around my leg couldn't stop me from getting answers to the million questions in my head.

i don't know how, but i made my way to the first person i spotted, a boy sleeping in a chair. he looked about 17, with blonde hair coming to his shoulders. i kicked his chair lightly so he would wake up, but apparently, that didn't do the trick.

grabbed him by the shoulders, i shook him hard. "time to wake up, blondie." his eyes opened slowly, but as he saw who i was, he stood up immediately as if he never slept at all.

taken by surprise by his sudden reaction, i backed up against the wall.

"who are you? where the fuck am i?" i stared at him with the fiercest look i could make, picking up a stick beside me for self-defense.

"calm down, greenie. you're a feisty one." He placed a hand on my shoulder as if to calm me down. i moved away instinctively, still confused and afraid.

"what the hell is a greenie?"

"it's another word to refer to newbies. time to rest now. go to sleep and we can talk tomorrow."

my questions!

did I just talk to him in my head? i opened my mouth to say the words out, but he had already left.

"could he be newt?" i thought about that name until i saw the sky turn dark.

I woke up the next day with my plan to run out of this place. bad decision. i didn't take many steps before my legs crumpled underneath me from the wound the previous day. I picked myself up to find someone, just anyone, to answer my questions.

i managed to drag myself over to the nearest boy and gently tapped him on the shoulders. It was the same guy from yesterday.

"you're an early riser. i was about to wake you up but seems like you did fine on your own. you ready for -"

"who are you? where is this place? why am I here? can i go back?" i barely gave him the chance to continue before my questions flowed out of my mouth.

"slim down, greenie. welcome to the glade. you'll get your answers later. now shut your hole."

"but..."

"just shush." He placed a finger to my lips stared at me in the eyes, before gesturing for me to follow him. but i was dazed. i felt like he just hypnotized me. i could still picture those eyes in front of my face, even though the boy was far away from me. those gorgeous brown eyes, striking and irresistible, seeming to hold me in place...

i slapped myself awake from my daze of being lost in the moment. hold up, roxelle. i just met this guy. i can't be drooling all over him. "you still there, kid?" the blonde boy was standing in front of me again, snapping his fingers to get my attention.

"tell me where we're going first, blondie."

laughing at what i called him, he introduced himself. "the name's newt, greenie." he smiled and held out a hand.

"roxelle," i answered softly, a blush creeping in.

so you're the one.

he started dragging me around the glade to meet different gladers. he introduced me to thomas and teresa, the greenies before i came. then alby, the so-called leader. he said I wouldn't want to meet gally because he was a bloody pile of klunk, but i insisted on meeting everyone.

eventually, as the sky darkened, a creaking sound resounded around the glade. "what the hell is that?" i yelled.

"those are the walls, roxelle. they close at night, but no one, except for the runners, is allowed to go out."

"why not? It looks mysterious, and i love mysteries."

"because...look, i'm not supposed to tell you this, but keep it a secret."

"sure, go on."

"because of the grievers."

"well, who gives a damn? i want to be a runner." I proclaimed.

newt's mouth shaped into a surprised 'o' then shook his head and walked away.
