NEWT POV

Was she out of her mind? Not even past her first week in the Glade, and she already wants to be a Runner. It reminds me of Tommy actually.

Ever since she came to the Glade, I had felt a strange connection to her. Once, I even heard her voice in my head. Anyways, I had to find out a way to persuade her. After Chuck and Alby died, I promised myself never to let another Glader die.

I heard running footsteps behind me, and someone was tapping on my shoulders. Roxelle.

"What?" I snapped.

"Calm down Newt, I just came to ask you what other jobs are there in the Glade."

"Oh...that. You will learn soon enough. After you got used to the Glade, you will meet the different Keepers and experience every job, then you can choose a job." I explained.

She nodded slowly then smiled. "Thanks Newt." Despite myself, I started grinning back at her. What are you doing, Newt? I scolded myself. Here I am, supposed to be the one in charge, and I'm just droolimg over this Greenie. Grab a hold of yourself Newt.

"Okay. Now back to the official stuff." I told her. "There's a Tour Alby and I were supposed to do for you Greenies."

"Were?" She interrupted. "Why "were"?"

I was impressed by how closely she wad listening. "You're an attentive one. You see, Alby is...gone. He was killed, unfortunately. So now I have to handle everything by myself. Anyways. I will wake you up early tomorrow, early enough to see Minho and the Runners going out. So get a good night's sleep."

"Ok. Good night, Newt."

"Night, Roxelle. Oh, whenever you feel peckish, go over to Frypan. He always has something to eat."

When I heard no reply, I assumed that she had heard and went to check on Minho.

"Hey Minho. Had a good run today?" I found him sitting beside the Box.

"Yeah Newt...just tired." He replied, his voice obvious that something was wrong.

"Come on Minho you shank. I know you better than anyone in the Glade. Well, maybe Tommy might, but that's out of our concerns. What's wrong?"

"Newt...I don't think we need Runners anymore. You see, we weren't planning to tell anyone, but I think I can trust you with this. The maze...there's no way out. We're trapped." Minho said, downcast.

"Bloody hell. Since when..."

"A few weeks."

"WEEKS?! You guys have just been running out there everyday for nothing?!" I was appalled. How could this be? A maze always had a way in and a way out. Well, not this one.

"So...when are you planning to reveal it?" I asked cautiously.

But the only reply I got was a shake of his head, and a mumble,"Night, Newt."

I was sure something was going on with these Runners.

And I will find out what.

"Rise and shine, Roxelle, time for Tour." I literally had to drag her out and tell her to get ready for some walking. She reluctantly followed.

"See, those are the Runners, going out into the Maze to...solve it and get us out." I said, knowing perfectly in my mind that there was no way out. I showed around the Box, the Slammer, and the Homestead. She obviously seemed to have got used to the Glade life.

The sun was starting to set. We grabbed some food from Frypan, and sat down in front of the Maze.

"Newt, mind if I ask, but why do you have that limp?"

"I tried to kill myself Roxelle." I sighed, the memories of 2 years ago coming back. "I thought dying would be better than living in this shucking place. I bloody hated the place. I climbed the walls and jumped off. If Alby hadn't found me, I would be dead."

Roxelle was looking at me with horrified eyes. "Is that true?"

"Yes. It's shucking true, shank."
