Landon
I need this break, even if it isn't going to be relaxing. I just had to tell the family of a twelve-year-old patient that her leukemia is not responding the treatment, and we need to move onto new methods. A situation that most recognize for the desperation it is. So getting out of the ward is paramount, even if it is to visit someone hurt, who is important to Nikki and Dex, and therefore important to me.
I grab a coffee from the hole-in-the-wall stand on the twelfth floor. I'm still so tired after yesterday – I never got the chance to go back to bed after we brought Dae to the hospital, and I only grabbed an hour or so during my overnight shift. I contemplate just sitting for a minute, drinking my coffee, but it's manic here. More people than usual, rushing around, and I see a couple of cops in tearing down a corridor, shouting buzzwords into their radios. Something must have happened on this floor. It's not unusual. Could be anything from a patient in psychosis to some visitor freaking out over the end of visiting hours. You really see the worst sides of people in a hospital.
I brave it, and fight to the ward, but it's in anarchy. There are police everywhere, and nurses who seem to be wavering on the spectrum between furious and terrified. I spot a familiar face and approach her.
"Susan, what's happening?"
"Oh, Dr Davis, I'm sorry, it's such a mess. Have you come to see Dae again? You must know then?"
"Know what, Susan?"
"That handsome man, the one that looks like an action movie star, the one that sits outside his room when his friends visit, he was leaving the hospital earlier. He got shot outside."
I know she must be talking about Connor. But, he's been shot?
It feels so wrong. Connor is always a calm presence – just milling in the background unobtrusively. And he's somehow been caught up in whatever's going on with this thing with Dae. Because, even without any kind of confirmation, I'm positive what's happened to him has something to do with that mystery. I didn't question Dex about it. He'll tell me when he's ready, and I'm content to keep me and Nikki away from problems. Maybe I'll take him home, in a couple hours when my shift's done, and we can spend the whole day in bed.
I immediately feel selfish for the thought. Dex, or Dae, might need us. Nikki's a source of comfort for Dae, I know that, and I won't stop him from being there.
A new face I know approaches.
"Hi Landon," Weston says. He's Dex's friend, I think they might have worked together back in the day, though they don't talk about it. He's a cop now. He'll be able to fill me in.
"What's happened? Susan says there's been a shooting."
"There has, and maybe you can help. I understand Connor Martin works for François Girard? Watching over his subs, or something?"
"Yes, he's a Personal Protection Officer. He's been shot?"
"He was leaving, with his charge, it seems. There was an altercation outside the hospital. A large black car pulled up – we're getting the footage – and several men jumped out and grabbed the boy, dragging him into the car. I understand from witnesses Martin fought back hard, someone cold cocked him, but it didn't stop him. He almost got the boy, but someone from inside the car shot at him. Hit his stomach. He's in emergency surgery now, and I'm afraid it doesn't look good."
Shit. It couldn't be worse. Frankie's going to...I don't even know. Ellis has been taken? And Connor's one of his best friends. I feel dizzy for a moment, but then Ellis runs down the corridor, screaming for Weston, and I blink confusedly at him.
