A young dark eyed girl sat hunched against the wall, hiding from the boy with blue eyes. He popped out from her left, and jumped on top of her, tickling her. She laughed, a joyful sound that rang through the small house, making her mother smile.

"Stop it James!" She cried playfully.

The small boy got off her and helped her up. Both of the children lifted their small noses to the ceiling, smelling the sweet scent of sugar cookies. They peered around the corner, and saw the plate of hot cookies on the small table. The brother and sister looked to eachother, and said at the same time,

"Cookies."

They ran to the table, and each grabbed a cookie, or two. Cassandra stuck a cookie into her mouth whole, and spit it out. Tears welled in her eyes, and she put her fingers to her burning tongue.

"What's wrong Cass?" James asked, putting a hand on his little sister's shoulder.
"It was too hot," she whimpered, dropping her head onto his shoulder.

He put his arms around her, stroking her hair. The children's mother walked into the room when Cassandra started to cry. James let go of his sister, and their mother kneeled in front of them.

"What happened my dear?"
"Mama I burned my tongue."
"You must learn patience. But until then, James, my darling, will you get some water please?"
"Yes Mama."
"It hurts Mama."
"I know dear."

James ran in with a short glass of water, splashing it over the wooden floor. He handed it carefully to his sister, and she drank it.

"Is it better now?" James asked.

Cassandra nodded, and gulped down the rest of the water. James handed her now cooled cookie. She took a small bite, and her face brightened. She smiled at her mother and brother, they smiled back.

The resemblance between Cassandra and her mother was almost uncanny. They had the same eyes, button nose, the same hair. Their laugh sounded very similar, and even at a young age, Cassandra had a strong opinion, just like her mother.

She handed the remains of her half-eaten cookie to her mother, who finished it off with a smile. Her mother kissed the young girl on the cheek, and stood up, wiping her hands on her dress.
