Aangs pov
My body was flooded with nerves as I walked down the hallway. She was an Airbender, just like me. How did she survive?, who is she?I walk to the door with Katara because Sokka still hasn't returned from his hunt for lunch. I look to see her, sitting upright, wearing her Air nomad clothes that were burned and dirty, her hair is a mess.
"Hello," Katara says coming close to the bed she's lying on,
"Stay back!" She jumped to her feet and stood in a fighting stance,
"Woah, we aren't here to hurt you. We found you in the Southern sanctuary." I said
She relaxed and looked confused,
"What's your name?" Katara asked,
"My name is Malerie, and you are?" She sat back in the hospital bed,
"Katara, and this is Aang." Katara responded and pointed to me. I waved with a smile on my face,
"Mind if we ask why you were in there?" I say
"Fire benders." She looked down, this was obviously not something she liked to remember,
"Could you tell us your story?" Katara said taking a seat, I followed.
"I don't remember much. I come from the Eastern girls temple, we heard about the fire nation planning to attack each temple in order of the south to the west then north and finally eastern. The elder ladies decided we needed to help the southern air temple prepare for the first attacks. They gathered me and all the other masters and sent us away." She said, a tear falling down her cheek
"When we got there we found out that they were already attacking, we fought back but I remember feeling so much heat, so much fire. I got scared and ran from my station that I was assigned to protect and flew down the sanctuary hall. I was followed by two tall men, they shot lots of fire at me and burned my arm." She pulled her arm up to reveal stream like burns going down her arm.
"The pain was too much so I had to get away, I opened the sanctuary doors, I remembered the Monks saying something about how the sanctuary preserves all energy within it including youth. I locked the doors behind me and listened to my people scream. I was weak, I didn't help them and I couldn't get out to try. Soon I felt faint being stuck in there for who knows how long I passed out. Next thing I knew I heard people talking in the halls and used the last of my strength to get their attention. Now I'm here so there you go, that's how I got in the sanctuary."she exhaled exhaustedly.
"That's awful, I'm so sorry that happened to you." Katara said as she placed a hand on her shoulder, she gave a small smile back.
"Hey, your an Airbender!" She said looking at my arrow,
"Yep!" I said happily
"So are the Monks ok?" She questioned
"I'm so sorry Malerie bu-" Katara was cut off by Sokka who walked in holding a sandwich,
"Woah the girls awake," he said, "hi I'm Sokka," he stuck out a dirty hand to her. She smiled and shook it anyway.
"Sokka, this is Malerie." I said
"Anyway, have you heard from the monks? If your alive there's sure to be others!" She said staring at me with worry in her eyes her gaze set on my eyes,
"No, like you I was born 100 years ago. As far as I know they are all gone." I looked to my feet,
"Wait, wait 100 years? Your kidding right, this is a joke?" She laughed
"No, the fire nation wiped all of them out 100 years ago, we are so sorry Malerie." Katara said, jeez she liked to say sorry a lot.
"What am I gonna do now." She placed her face in her palms and sobbed,
"Hey, don't cry why don't you come with us. We're headed to the North Pole to find Katara and I a waterbending master." I said coming closer to the bed,
"Waterbending, now you're really confusing me, I thought you said you were a master Airbender?" Malerie raised an eyebrow,
"He's the avatar, he gets to bend all the elements and things," Sokka said as he finished his sandwich.
"The Avatar!" She said jumping in the air, "no way! I've heard stories about you!" Malerie said, still floating using airbending.
"Really? That's great! I'm famous," I grinned
"I always wanted to meet you, when I went to the southern temple I was hoping to find you there." She said landing on the ground, she fell to her feet and stumbled. I heard her wince in pain,
"Woah don't go standing too fast, let's take some time to rest we can leave in a day or so, if you're up for it?" Katara asked as she helped Malerie back to her bed,
"Yes! I mean where else do I have to go?" She said,
"True." Sokka said
The day flew past quickly and the doctor suggested to let Malerie stay in the infirmary until she gains some weight. We were escorted to a large home because they found out I was the avatar, which I didn't mind.
"What do you guys think of Malerie?" Katara asked,
"Yeah shes got a good sense of humour, ohh we should give her a nickname!" Sokka said jumping up from his mat,
"How about Mally or larrie no how about just Mal?" Sokka said
"Sounds good, and I like her. It's great not to be the last Air nomad!" I say
"Same, i think it'll be good not to be the only girl in the group." Katara said.
I fell asleep that night easily. It was good to know that I wasn't alone. I have this feeling There's something special about her.
