Maleries pov
I woke up cold. I was told to stay in the infirmary due to the mass amount of weight that I lost. I hate having to answer questions, there always seems to be something that someone doesn't understand but Just thinking about that day haunts me. The sounds of my peoples final cries for help. I kick myself for being selfish every minute.
I'm very grateful although, I'm so happy to have met new friends. Aang is an Airbender, even better the avatar!
I look to the side of my hospital room to see some oats and fruit. I eat it but the oats are dry. I hear the nurse who's been caring for me for the past 26 hours approach the room, I hope that she doesn't ask questions again.
"Malerie, you are at a sustainable weight and you are free to leave." She says in a flat monotone voice.
"Hooray!" I jump into the air,
I quickly get dressed, I spent the rest of yesterday patching up my air nomad clothing so all the holes from fire had been sewn together.
I run out.
"Hey, Suki right?" I say to a girl who was passing by,
"That's me." She says turning to face me
"Would you happen to know where the avatar is?" I ask frantically barely able to stand still,
"The large building up there is where he and his friends are, but they might be gone at the moment. I can take you to Sokka," she says
"Uhhh.." I groan, slightly disappointed "okie dokie," I smile, Sokka was still my friend too, right?
Suki takes me to a hut made of wood and leads me inside, I look around to see girls holding fans in green outfits and incredible make up. As I look around at each of the girls I notice...
"Sokka?" I ask to one of the warriors,
"Hi, mal." He seemed embarrassed, probably because he got caught in the female outfit, I hear the nickname and smile
"You look cool, could I try?" I say smiley, this was an attempt to comfort him. I didn't need him to hate me on our first day.
"Uhh sure," she says.
A couple minutes later and I looked just like the kyoshi warriors,
"Wow, thank you!" I say
We began training, Suki as the leader teaching forms to us. She explained how a fan was like an extension of yourself, that reminded me of the sisters at the temple. I managed to ace the technique and had fun, minutes even hours went by when I heard someone walk by,
"Hey Sokka, nice dress," the boy chuckled and walked away,
'Aang,' I thought to myself,
"Thank you Suki, I'll be back in a second." I say,
I jumped away and pulled off the dress that was sitting on top of my Airbender outfit and wiped the make up away, much to my disliking.
I arrived at the big house they were staying in and I look trough the door and see no one. I knock only to hear someone faintly call "come in" .
I walk inside and make my way up the stairs to see Aang in the door way and Katara kneeling down waterbending from a small bowl,
"FINE!"
"FINE!"
Aang storms away completely ignoring my presence next to him. Katara looks angry that she lost her concentration,
"Woah, what just happened?" I ask cautious of Kataras emotions,
"Aang is too caught up in his fan girls, he's being completely unreasonable and doesn't want to leave!" She says. I nod and think of a good response,
"Where is he headed now?" I ask, I hate to ask questions but I have an idea,
"To go ride the unagi down at the beach, he wanted me to come." She says,
"Then we'll go, and maybe we can all figure this out, besides don't you wanna watch him ride the unagi?" I say,
"Kinda... ok let's go." She caves.
We made our way to the beach to find Aang in the water looking sad, he looks up to see Katara and I at the edge of the water,
"Katara! Mal! You showed up." He shouted
"I wanted to make sure you were ok, you really had me worried ." Katara admits,
"But back there you acted like you didn't care." He says, I'm just sitting and watching in silence, I've always been good at keeping quiet the sisters made sure of that.
"I know I'm sorry," she calls,
"Me too, I was being a jerk." He says,
"Well get out of the water before you catch a cold you big jerk!" Katara cups her hands around her mouth.
Aang smiles, "on my way." He began swimming back when I see something,
"AANG GET OUT OF THE WATER!" I call as I begin running closer to the water, Aang notices and looks back, he gets flung by the giant unagi it's tail ruthlessly slashing him, I can see his struggle,
"HOLD ON IM COMING!" I call out as I begin to Airbend to move swiftly across the surface of the water to get to Aang, I jump on the unagi and start attacking, giving Katara a chance to pull Aang out of the water, I throw sharp slices of Air at the unagi while I float in the air above. After minutes the unagi retreats.
I swim back to shore and air dry my clothes. I run quickly towards Aang, Katara bends the water out of his lungs,
"Katara, don't ride unagi, not fun." He struggles, Katara sees a ship,
"Zuko!" She says helping Aang up and leading him back to the village,
'Ok I get that I'm new here but what's with all the ignoring?' I think to myself, I shrug and run to follow them, we are too late fire benders are attacking.
I help the kyoshi warriors with attacking, using the movements and airbending to fight when I see a teenager with a scar on his eye stare at me in disbelief,
"She's an Airbender!" He shouts catching the attention of the fire soldiers. "Get her!" He yells pointing a finger at me.
I run away and find a hiding spot and look to my right to see Suki kissing Sokka, I'd ask him about this later but now I had to get out of here. Sokka spots me and gestures for me to follow him. I do. We make our way to a giant flying Bison, I remember them from when I was younger, I remember my bison Alla.
"Quick let's go!" Sokka says, I airbend myself on the back of the beast
We ascend and look down, the village burning.
"I know it's hard but you did the right thing, if we didn't leave now they would've burned the whole place down." Katara tries
Aang doesn't make eye contact. He jumps off the edge to the water. I gasp. I look over the Saddle to see Aang riding the unagi. He forces it to spray water over the village and stop the fire from causing anymore damage. He Airbends back to Appa,
"I know, I know that was dangerous and stupid." He says,
"Yes it was," Katara smiles, and hugs him. I wave of jealousy flooded my thoughts, why did I feel so angry when she hugged him. I hate this feeling, I take a deep breath and sigh, this catches everyone's attention,
"You ok mal?" Sokka asked,
"Yeah, I'm fine don't worry," I snap my facial expression to a almost convincing smile, they all decided not to ask anything further, which is a relief.
Night comes quickly and we find camp. I didn't have any of my belongings but I didn't mind, I found a soft bit of grass and fell asleep, silent.
'Maybe I'm too quiet, that would explain why they forget I'm there." I laugh under my breath. The sisters taught us to speak when spoken to, i guess it became a habit.
Everyone fell asleep the cool nights wind brushing through Maleries hair.
