TW: Fighting

"Ok, so what the actual-" Roman glances at Patton, "Heck was that?"

"A person who's gone to five of my middle schools and is a douche, that's what," I say.

"Well, according to him you seem to be a hypocrite," Logan says.

We all look at him.

"He's implying that you've been hiding something, hence not being completely honest with us. Didn't you get mad at us for the same thing?" Logan states.

No, and yes.

"Look, my past is messy and I don't like to talk about it. But I haven't kept anything huge from you guys, other than normal middle school drama," I say.

Drama that included physical fights and mental breakdowns, but drama nonetheless.

They still look like they don't believe me.

"Jason is one of my bullies, he wants you guys to not believe me and to ditch me, as his act of 'revenge'," I say.

"Why would he want revenge in the first place?" Logan asks.

I shrug.

"Any number of reasons. But probably because I cut him off as a friend when he became toxic," I say.

"Aw, are you ok kiddo?" Patton asks.

"I'm fine. Perfectly fine," I say.

I am far from fine and very fine at the same time. Yes, I'm aware that rhymed.

"Well, I think we should just avoid that kid then," Roman says.

I nod. I hate Jason and just avoiding him makes things better.

"Ok, well this has been fun. I'm going home now, to where my parents aren't waiting," I say.

I grab my backpack out of my locker and exit the school.

---

Ok, so apparently the universe is trying to screw me over. How do I know? Jason's now my neighbor.

I finish my homework that night fairly quickly, so I decide to go for a walk. Only because it gives me an excuse to get out of the house.

"I'm going for a walk," I say as I go downstairs.

"Be home by 10," Mom says, not even looking up from her work.

I grab my hoodie and walk outside. It's not too cold out, unlike February in other regions. I walk around the neighborhood, which is pretty spread out, with a lot of empty lands nearby. I decide to go down to the meadow, which looks nice. I've never been there before.

After about an hour of wandering, I lie down in the grass. I'm listening to music right now, and I decide to switch playlists. I've never admitted it, but I love musicals. Which is why I understand half the things said at school.

After a while, Apex Predator comes on. And right on cue with the song, Jason shows up.

"What do you want?" I ask, standing up.

"I'm just here to chat. Can't we catch up, old friend?" He asks.

"You can talk to me once I'm dead," I spit.

"Oh, and Virgie, me and your old friends have been getting along great. It's good to know I'm not the only one you manipulated," Jason says.

"It wasn't manipulation," I say, "They left me after the Lights talked to me, it wasn't my fault,"

"So you regret being with the Lights? I'm sure they'll be happy to know that,"

"No, it's not like that! I never wanted to pick, it's just-"

"You wanted friends who're honest when you're not honest yourself. Honestly Virgil, you really are a hypocrite," Jason says.

"Please just go away," I say.

"Is that all you're going to say? 'Please go away'? Wow, you're losing your touch,"

"Look, if you're here to beat me up I don't care. If you're here to make me lose my mind it's a little too late. So which are you here for?" I ask.

Those are the only two things he ever causes when he's with me.

"You really think I'm that shallow?" He asks.

I raise my eyebrow.

"You really think I'm that stupid?" I counter.

"You must be if you expect me to give you an answer," Jason says.

Fair point.

"Can we please hurry this up? I have to be home by 10," I say.

"Well, if that's what you want," He shrugs.

In a flash, he punches me in the jaw. Great, now I know what he's here for. I duck as he swings again, and kick him in the legs. He only stumbles a bit, which is not what I expected.

"Virgie, you're still weak," Jason says.

Yeah, but only against him. He's like half a foot taller and easily has 20 pounds on me.

He nails me right in the gut, causing me to double over. We're in the middle of nowhere, so I can't expect anyone to help me. Not that they would even if we weren't here.

"Giving up so soon? Our other guests haven't even shown up yet, and I want to give them a show," Jason taunts.

Oh, I'll give him a show. I get back up and swing a kick right to his side. He catches my leg and flings me down. I'm good at fighting people my own size, not people a whole lot bigger.

"Oooh! I'm right on time!" I hear Remus call.

Great, now he's here. I really hope he isn't recording.

"Yeah!" Jason calls, "Where J-Dee?"

"Little JJ didn't want to come," Remus says.

It's funny that Jason's last name is Decker, so he's also a JD.

I hear Remus crunching on popcorn. Or at least I hope it's popcorn. I look up at him. Great, he's recording.

Jason kicks me in the leg, and I fall to the ground. Yeah, it's probably sprained. I push myself back up and wipe my nose. There's blood. I don't remember him hitting me in the face.

"What happened to that strong little boy I've heard about? Have you decided to be a wimp after all?" Jason teases.

I don't respond, I just throw a punch at his face. He catches it, but I use my other hand to slap him. He didn't expect that.

"Oh, you little piece of-" Jason starts.

"Hit him in the crotch!" Remus calls.

Before he gets the chance to, I duck and sprint around him.

"Always fleeing, huh?"

"It's better than always chasing," I say.

No clue what that means, but it was a comeback.

Our fight continues, Remus shouting random things when it gets too quiet. I'm dizzy, bleeding, and very bruised when Jason grabs a rock. He throws it at my head and I fall to the ground, everything going black. The last thing I hear is,

"What the hell did you do, J?!"
