A rumble shook the entire village and Roman slowly lowered his wooden sword as dust fell from the rafters. His mother glanced up from her darning, his twin brother lowered his wooden morning star and his father stood up with a heavy frown on his face.

"Wassat?" Remus asked.

"I don't know. Cassandra, get the boys into the basement and stay there, I'm going to find the village guard," His father said, walking over to the wall which held an old, heavy battle-axe, the mans' favourite possession. He picked it up and began to make his way to the door.

Roman's' mother stood up. "Harold, no. You know it was probably just tremors from the mountain, they've been getting more frequent anyway."

There was an ear-piercing shriek from outside and screams filled the air. Harold narrowed his eyes and arched an eyebrow at his wife. "Does that sound like tremors to you?"

Remus slowly wriggled his hand into Roman's' and the two twins stared wide-eyed at their parents. Cassandra glanced down at them and then looked back to her husband. "I'll put them in the basement if you let me come with you."

Something smashed outside and Harold hesitated. Then he stomped his foot and growled, "There's no time to argue. Fine, but make sure the boys are safe, I'll find you a sword."

Cassandra smirked triumphantly but it was fleeting as she quickly started to usher her only children down to the trapdoor that led to the basement. Roman started down the wooden steps first, followed by Remus. They turned to look up at the woman and their mother paused tearfully when she saw their wide eyes and scared expressions. She leaned in carefully and kissed the boys on their foreheads softly.

"We love you, okay?" She whispered. "Stay down here and be safe, we'll be back before you know we're gone."

Then she closed the trapdoor on them, muting the wails and cries of the village around them.

The twins stood in silence as their eyes adjusted slowly. "I don't wanna stay and hide," complained Remus. "I wanna fight!"

Roman pouted. "Me too... Daddy keeps his old swords down here, right?"

"Yuh-huh!" Remus confirmed, eyes lighting up. "Let's find 'em!"

The two boys instantly scurried down the steps and scoured over the room. Roman often screamed when his hand hit a spider web, which would always make Remus laugh. Something above them crashed but the twins hardly noticed as they gleefully searched, feeling the rush of disobedience. Remus found what he wanted first and he was delighted. It was a morning star. A real, proper morning star. Obviously, it was quite heavy but Remus was surprisingly strong for a ten-year-old. The boy picked it up and weighed it around in his hands, getting a feel for the handle.

Roman had almost given up furiously when he realised his father failed to keep any rapiers or longswords in his collection,  but he did find a broadsword. A little over excited with his find, Roman had actually fallen over, not expecting the weight of it as he landed awkwardly on the floor.

Remus snickered. "That's not a one-handed weapon!" He teased.

"Are you sure? I thought all swords were one-handed..." Roman retorted disbelievingly.

"Yeah, that one's double-handed, Daddy told me!" Promised Remus. He walked over to his twin brother, picking up the broadsword. "You hold it like this!" He explained, with a small demonstration as he slashed at the air.

Roman nodded and scrambled to his feet. "Okay, I get it, now gimme!"

Remus grinned widely. "Roman, I won't give it if you're being rude! What do we say?"
