Hey guys. This story begins when Sophie and Keefe are together, and yeah that's gross to me, so I've got to fix this, right? :)
Sophie honestly had to say, ever since she'd become Keefe's "girlfriend", she had never been truly happy. Fake smiles, sarcasm, misery, grief, torment, fury; that was her new life. She hated it. Sophie had just argued with Keefe again, over whether or not she was allowed to hang out with Fitz. Keefe argued that he didn't want Fitz "going and winning you over", and Sophie disagreed. Fitz was her best friend. Her Cognate. She shared much more with him than Keefe, who would ridicule her. Sophie had to choose her words to Keefe carefully and wisely, as a single spark could ignite a wildfire inside Keefe. Raging. Yelling. She didn't think it was a healthy relationship.
Which was precisely why she had to end it.
Sophie invited Keefe over. She had a plan, and had told Biana about it. Biana thought it was a brilliant idea. So Keefe came over, with a smile on his face. It was sickening. How could everything be so normal to him while it was eating Sophie up on the inside? He'd called Sophie a few names that would have made her immediately "ditch" him, but she had wanted to give him a chance. Then she decided, no. He'd had his chances.
"Hey!" Keefe said, grinning. "What'd you want to talk about?"
"I... wanted to show you some human music. You know English, right?"
"Yup, know everything."
Sophie cringed. Nope. He didn't know how she felt.
So Sophie took her iPod out of the drawer and passed one of the earbuds to Keefe. Then she found the playlist that she needed. She hit the "play" button.
You've got a hold of me
Don't even know your power
I stand a hundred feet
But I fall when I'm around you...Keefe listened quietly, without making a sound.
Finally, they reached the section Sophie really, really wanted.
Please have mercy on me
Take it easy on my heart
Even though you don't mean to hurt me
You keep tearing me apart
Would you please have mercy on me
I'm a puppet on your string
And even though you got good intentions
I need you to set me free
Would you please have mercy, mercy on my heart
Would you please have mercy, mercy on my heart......A while later the song ended.
"So..." Keefe said, shifting uncomfortably in his seat. "Was... was there a reason you showed me this particular song?"
Duh.
Dumbo.
But she couldn't say that.
"Yes." she said, gathering her courage.
"You used to actually, like actually like me. And now? Just like in the song, "I'm a puppet on your string". And I hate this. We both know I never had feelings for you and yours for me have faded. So, bye. Get out my room. I do not want to see you here again. Get. Out. Sencen."
Keefe stayed put.
"Or will I have to force you, Sencen?"
Sophie threatened, emphasising the use of Keefe's surname. At the same time, she rubbed her stomach where the knot of tangled emotions were. Keefe walked towards her. "Sophie, I-"
"No excuses." Sophie snapped. "Get out of Havenfield and never come back, or let me see you again. Don't make me hurt you." Keefe came closer still, and reached for her hand. Sophie flinched. He didn't even respect her boundaries. One last chance.
"One..."
"Two..."
"Three."
Sophie closed her eyes and channeled all her hurt, anger, pain, exasperation and irritation out of her body. Shooting out in a laser-like beam. A red one. Aimed at a single target.
It hit Keefe squarely in the chest, sending him toppling over. He thrashed and twitched on the ground; he screamed and yelled. Grady burst into her room. "Sophie!"
"Um, sorry dad, it's Keefe!" Sophie yelled over Keefe's voice. "He was getting a bit too close."
As if on cue, Fitz leaped to Havenfield, somehow appearing in the corridor. "Oh, hi, Sophie, hi Grady - WHAT THE HELL?"
Sophie shamelessly said, "I inflicted." There was a nod of approval each from Sandor and Bo. Fitz grinned. "Clearly it's not a good idea to get you angry." His smile faded. "Uh... will he be okay?" Sophie shrugged. "I have no idea. I don't care." There was a look of awe on Grady's face, and then it was replaced by excitement. "FINALLY!" He screamed.
I'm sorry. What happened? Fitz transmitted.
Don't be sorry. I hated him. He forced me to be his girlfriend in the first place.
Oh...
It was... a toxic relationship, let me just say.
Sophie transmitted the memories of the latest argument, and the break-up.
Soph... I'm so sorry.
It's okay. At least now he gets to feel all of it at a go.
Sophie glared at Keefe with such venom in her expression that even Grady was alarmed.
"Miss... Foster... I may have to take you to Elwin for anger management issues..." Sandor murmured. "I understand that you were mad but it's bee ten minutes and he's still screaming."
"I. Don't. Care." Sophie was tempted to blast the song from her iPod, but the lyrics didn't seem appropriate for this scenario.
Fitz followed Sophie outside, to Calla's Panakes tree.
"I just wanted to let you know, Fitz," Sophie said cautiously. "I... actually still like you."
Fitz smiled.
"Me too."
