I Want It to Be You

"Foster."

"Yes, Keefe?"

"I like you."

                                                                                             ***

A week had passed since Keefe had shared his feelings about Sophie. He'd asked her to be his girlfriend. And Sophie had said no.

She felt terrible, of course. She'd officially rejected two of her best friends. Things were okay between her and Dex already, but she'd seen how Keefe behaved after disappointments or grief. He would not be okay.

But Sophie decided she was going to give him his space, just like she had with Dex. Space to cool down, to realise they weren't meant to be. Yeah, yeah, Team Foster-Keefe and all, but Sokeefe... no. Just no. It would not work out. Sophie liked Keefe, but as a friend. Not that way.

"Hey, Soph?" Fitz walked into her room. "What's up? You haven't picked up your Imparter at all this whole week. I've hailed you, Biana's hailed you, Dex's hailed you, Tam and Linh have hailed you. Are you ignoring us?" "Oh hi Fitz!" Sophie sat up, a fake smile plastered on her face. "I'm sorry. It's just... been a rough few weeks." There was a silence that felt way too loud. "You can tell me, you know." Fitz's tone was suddenly seriously. "I know we've... broken up... but I'm still your friend. You can trust me."

"Okay, where do I even start?" Sophie groaned. "Okay. If you really want to know, can we just talk in my head?" Sophie added, mouthing "bodyguards". Fitz nodded and a moment later, he'd slipped past her blocking. (Fitz is bold, Sophie is italics)

Soph, I'm in.

Wow Fitz, I swear you're faster every time.

Fitz reached for Sophie's hands and their thumb rings snapped together. Sophie decided that she didn't feel like telling Fitz what had happened, so she simply projected the memory. Watching it replay in her head was so much more heartbreaking than she'd imagined. Especially since someone else was watching it as well.

The memory ended.

I'm so sorry.

It isn't your fault. I just... how was I supposed to explain that I didn't like him that way? It's like what happened with Dex.

Sophie. I just needed to tell you this. I'm really sorry about what I've said in the past few months. I still like you.

I still like you too, Fitz. That's why I said no to Keefe. I... just want it to be you.

That was what Fitz had said to her in Everglen when he'd confessed his feelings.

Really? Even after...

Sophie was sure the scene of Fitz yelling at her under the Panakes tree would be playing in his head.

Yes.

Thank you.

Fitz eyes were brimming with tears.

He leaned closer, then froze. Did he really want to do this?

Yes.

He paused for one extra second, giving Sophie the chance to shove him away.

She didn't.

So he leaned forwards and pressed his lips against Sophie's.
