Vonnie Tyler

"Happy birthday, Vonnie!"

A cupcake was being shoved into my face. I threw my head back to avoid being smeared with the frosting. I grabbed the cupcake as soon as I was far enough away to avoid another assault. My best friend, Mikhail, looked surprised. I didn't usually cut his jokes so short. On a normal day I would have let him smear me with frosting but I'm in a bad mood today.

I woke up this morning thinking that since it's my eighteenth birthday that I might do something different but then I realized that I've done the exact same thing every single day since I was in sixth grade. I didn't realize how bored I was with it until I was staring into my boring bowl of cheerios that I have every day. It gets old after a while. Even Mikhail's jokes aren't amusing anymore. I licked a bit of frosting off of the vanilla cupcake topped with rainbow colored frosting. "Thanks, Kail." I said using my nickname for him. He rolled his eyes at me like he always does when I call him that, "Sure thing, Von-Von. Oh and I'm really sorry but I can't come over tonight. Rain check?"

I dialed in the combination for my locker and stealthily put my bag under the door so all the birthday cards fell into my bag instead of on the ground. I knew they were there, because like I said, the exact same thing every year. I sighed. How did I not realize how boring my life was? "Seriously, Kail? You're ditching me again?" I put my books that I used for homework last night in my locker. I decided to just shove my whole book bag in there, taking my folders and notebooks out first, of course. I had Gym first period so what do I need my book bag for?

"I'm sorry! I forgot that Cassie made dinner plans tonight. I didn't realize last week when she made them that it was on your birthday." I rolled my eyes. I took out my phone preparing to put my buds in and ignore him. "Yeah and when we made these plans months ago, it doesn't mean anything. But Cassandra makes dinner plans and the whole world needs to stop. Thanks for being there for me, Kail." I stuck my phone in my front pocket.

I heard a faint tapping sound and I counted down from five in my head until, right on cue, she spoke. "Happy birthday, Elvonna!" Mikhail's girlfriend, Cassandra, is my worst enemy. She plays nice around Mikhail, but as soon as his back is turned there is a knife aimed at mine. "Thanks, Cassandra." I said with fake enthusiasm for Mikhail's benefit. As far as he knows the war between Cassandra and I had stopped since they got together six months ago.

"Oh, Elvonna, I've told you tons of times that you can call me Cassie." She said with a fake smile plastered on her face. I gave her an equally fake smile, "Sorry, it keeps slipping my mind." and walked towards the gym. Class doesn't even start for another half hour so I'm stuck outside the girl's locker room until Coach Reyes comes to open it. My phone chimed from my front left pocket so I went to look at the text, it was from Cassandra, Mikhail made us exchange numbers thinking that we'd need the numbers for 'emergencies'.

Just remember that my revenge will come. It will be when you least expect it. Don't forget. Happy birthday 'BFF'. -Cassandra.

That was not the first threatening text I've gotten from her. She vowed to get revenge on me in sixth grade because Asher Grey asked me to the Winter Dance instead of her. Since she is the most popular girl at school everyone expected Asher to ask her, but he surprised everyone by asking me. I said no, but just him asking me was enough to send her on a vendetta against me. I put my headphones in and played Emblem 3 until Coach came and opened the door.

I pulled my earbuds out and she stuck the key in the lock, "Happy birthday Elvonna. Would you like to sit out since it's your birthday?" I went to shrug my shoulders., but someone started talking. "It's your birthday?" I looked over to see a pretty girl with long blonde hair and emerald green eyes that were to die for. She was one of the twins that transferred from a town over, their dad started working for my dad in his company. I only know because my dad couldn't stop praising him at the dinner table after he started at the company.

My dad's company was a chain of boutiques called Glamorous. The twins' dad was the new financial adviser or something. Even though he's only been with the company a few weeks he's already done some major changes for the better. The girl, I don't know her name, waited for my answer. "Yeah, eighteenth." I smiled at the girl. She smiled back and walked in the door after Coach opened it and I followed her into the locker room. I went to my locker and started to dress out. Once I was dressed I went to let Coach know that I didn't mind participating today in class when I ran into the girl.

"So, are you celebrating with friends?" She was a curious one, she seemed to be a very social person as well. My phone chimed from the pocket in my p.e. sweat pants. I took it out and read the text from Kail.

I know your upset, but come on you don't need to be so mean about it. You know it's not like that.

"No, I'm not. The one friend I had decided to go to dinner with Satan's Queen." As I said it I realized how bad of a friend I made Kail sound.

"On your birthday? No offense but he doesn't sound like much of a friend, but don't worry I'll be your friend if you want." She gave me the most genuine smile I've ever seen. I laughed nervously, "Um, who are you?" I walked around her to continue walking to Coach's office knowing that she would follow. She laughed and bounced to my right side, "Oh, I'm Jodi Walters." She stopped walking to hold her hand out towards me. I stopped to put my hand in hers, "I'm Elvonna Tyler. I prefer Vonnie though, or if you want to make your own personal nickname for me I don't mind."

We continued walking towards Coach's office, we have a rather large locker room even though we have a small school. Jodi and I rounded the corner to Coach's office. I lightly knocked on the door to get Coach's attention. Coach looked over and saw Jodi and I standing in the doorway. "Ah, Tyler, have you decided to participate again this year?" Every year on the students' birthdays Coach lets the birthday kid and a friend sit out of Gym.

I was about to say yes, but instead said, "Not this year, Coach. I choose Jodi as my sit out buddy." I nodded my head towards Jodi, she pretended to wipe a tear off her cheek. Coach smiled and wrote something on her clipboard, probably that we still get full marks for the day. Jodi wrapped her arm around mine and turned us to walk into the Gym, even though we still had about fifteen minutes before class even started.

We sat down on the gym floor. "So what's your favorite band?" She had a really strange look on her face. The only way to describe it was that she looked like an obsessed stalker person. I shrugged it off and answered anyway. "I'm a really big fan of Five Seconds of Summer." Her eyes went wide and it was a little scary with the stalker look still plastered on her face. I was going to poke her to see if she was okay.

She started bouncing and screaming. "I love them! What's your favorite song? I will not accept She's So Perfect as an answer. My favorite is Just Saying or Mrs. All American." She was still bouncing, I'm gonna take a wild guess and say she was in the fandom. I never got into the fandom because I didn't have friends to join the fandom with and its no fun being in a fandom without friends to fangirl with.

"My favorite is Wherever You Are, or Long Way Home. Is that acceptable?" Before saying anything she threw her arms around me. She squeezed me super tight, "We are now best friends!"

"Jodi!" I turned to see the other twin standing by the gym door. Jodi got up and helped me off the floor and we walked over to the other twin. Jodi looked like a child about to be scolded. I'm guessing this other twin is the older twin, the protective twin. "Jolee, this is Elvonna, my new friend." Jodi said to her twin. Jolee squinted her eyes at me and started walking towards Jodi and I slowly. She stood above me trying to intimidate me, "Why did it take so long for you to become friends with Jodi?"

Jodi made a noise that I don't even think is human. I looked at her and she said, "Jolee, enough." I looked back at Jolee and she glared at me. "No, Jodi, I want to know why she's all of a sudden decided to be friends with you." It was a simple question.

"I'm not very sociable, I've been stuck in the same cereal box cycle since my mom died when I was ten, and I don't really acknowledge the outside world, until today. happy?" I returned the glare that Jolee was giving me. She shrugged and said, "Appeased."

The bell rang and the rest of the girls walked into the gym followed by Coach.
