I was awoken by a slight knock on the door. I rub my eyes as I see Norman entering my room.
"Hey" I said groggily.
"Hi...sorry I woke you" he replied. "There's dinner downstairs if you want some"
"Dinner?" I grabbed my phone to check the time and realised I've slept for hours. "Wow...it's six already!"
"Yep" Norman said popping the p.
"I'll be down in a sec" I said and he left.
I got up, fixed my hair and put more comfortable shoes before going downstairs. I could smell the food from upstairs so it wasn't hard to find my way to the kitchen. Once I reached the bottom of the stairs i walked through the long hallway and found the smell getting stronger and stronger. I walked into the sweet smelling room, while I saw Norma at the stove and Norman setting the table. But Dylan was nowhere to be seen. Norman must have gathered me looking around for him.
"Dylan will be back soon don't worry" he told me, smiling. I smiled back whilst taking a seat at the table. I looked around and saw the kitchen was fairly big. It wasn't anything luxurious but it had everything a kitchen needed. My thoughts were quickly disrupted by food being served in front of me.
"Thanks" I said to Norma. She gave me a big smile in return. God, did that food make me want to jump right into it! I was starving. I waited till everyone sat down, to show I wasn't desperate. It was silent at first when we all sat down, but Norma was the first to break it.
"So, Elissa is it?" She began. I nodded whilst taking in a spoonful of rice. "How did you and Dylan meet?" She asked, pointing her fork at me.
Oh gosh. I needed to think of a good lie.
"Oh..y'know at a club...we just saw each other and yeah it went on from there" I said trying not to choke on my food. She nodded whilst putting a piece of meat in her mouth.
"Do your parents know your going out with him?"
I stopped eating and frowned at my plate. I twiddled with the fork trying to find my words to say it without breaking down. I eventually looked back up and realised that I had four eyes staring at me waiting for me to say something. I sighed.
"My...um parents are...dead" I said looking back down, trying not to sound too disheartened. I could see from the corner of my eye, Norman looking horrified.
"Oh, I'm very sorry to hear...how did they die?" She asked.
"Mother!" I heard Norman instantly say, his voice slightly raised. She looked up at him.
"No, it's ok. I don't mind." I quickly said, trying to avoid an argument between them. Norman gave me a 'are you sure' look and I nodded to reassure him that it was ok.
"They died...in a car crash when I was very young."
"I'm so sorry" Norman said sympathetically.
"It's ok... I guess. I never really knew them anyway... Since the accident I was brought up by my step-parents, Joanne and Jack."
Norma's spoon suddenly clanked onto the plate, making me jump a little. Norman and I looked at her worriedly.
"So...what made you come here?" she asked after coming back to reality.
"Oh,well I was sent here. Several years back my um, step mum passed away, making my step dad the next of kin. I didn't really... Lets just say he wasn't the best of dads. He was an alcoholic and he did...unpleasant things...but they are the past now. I didn't know till yesterday that I was going to come here. I don't know who sent me here but all I knew was that I was going to live with my uncle ...only to find out from Dylan...that he is dead."
The room suddenly filled with silence. Norman and Norma suddenly both turned to look at each other, wide eyed. She then turned to me with a uncomfortable stare.
"What was your uncles name?" She asked with a scary look on her face. My heart started to pound rapidly. Anymore and it could have come out of my body.
"Erm,well I didn't really know him at all. I only found out about him yesterday. His name is...was...Keith summers."
Her eyes instantly grew wider than ever. She got up whilst pushing the chair back.
"Get out." She said which caused my heart to race even more. Yep. Any minute now and it was going to jump right out.
"W-why?" I asked scared and confused at the same time.
"Get, out!!" She screamed and banged her hand on the table, causing her spoon to drop onto the floor. I was so scared it caused me to jerk up, pushing my chair back.
"I'm- I'm sorry...I didn't mean to-" She began to walk towards me so I started to back up.
"I don't care who you are and if you are Dylan's girlfriend...Don't, you ever...ever come in here again!" She was shouting now, her eyes raging with anger.
"Mother! Stop it! Your scaring her!" Norman tried but she just ignored him.
I continued to walk backwards, tears we're streaming down my face by now. I was crying because I was scared... But I had no idea why. I had no clue why she was shouting at me...what I had done. All these thoughts were running in my head until I bumped into something. I turned around only to see Dylan with his arms around me, looking horrified.
"What the hell Norma!!" He shouted, whilst trying to comfort me.
I pulled us apart. "I have to go" I quickly said, trying to stop my eyes from watering even more. Before he could continue, I had already pushed past him and ran out the door, into the darkness.
