The first day didn't go as bad as I thought it would. After my run in with Abby, I thought she was going to give me hell throughout the entire day. However, she did give me a warning if I piss her off enough. But there was definitely something about her that made me think differently. I got off the bus and walked down to my house and Ellie walked down to her's.
"Oh, Y/N, if you ever need help with anything, you're more than welcome to come to my house and talk. And Dina will do her best she can with helping you."
"Thank you, Ellie," I smiled.
Ellie smiled and walked down to her house. I walked into my house and saw my mother was home. Well this was going to be a great conversation to have.
"Hi, Y/N," my mother said as I walked through the garage door.
"Hi, mom. I thought you were going to be late tonight."
"I was supposed to, but they said I could go home early."
"I see," I said.
"How was your first day?"
"It was alright. Could have gone better."
"How so?" my mother asked.
"There was an incident on the bus today."
"Incident?" my mother's tone grew concerned.
"There wasn't anything bad. It's just that this girl who has a reputation at the school, I had a run in with her."
"Was it anything bad?"
"She basically said that if I piss her off, I piss off a beast."
"Oh?" my mother asked.
"Then this girl who I met at the bus stop, Ellie, she basically said that I should try to stay out of her way. Because her team nickname is literally The Beast."
"What does this girl look like?"
I pulled up the school's website and showed her.
"Are you sure that's a girl?" my mother asked.
"Yes she is a girl."
"Abby, huh," my mom took a closer look at her. "Well if anything bad happens, you let me know."
"That's the thing," I said.
"What?"
"Her reputation is basically the highlight of the school. Her father is on the school board and she has bullied multiple kids in the past."
"And the school has done nothing?"
"Nope."
"What the hell? If a student is bullying another student and you have a no tolerance policy, that's just messed up. I don't give a damn if she's went to states for those sports. I don't give a damn if her father is on the school board. You need to teach kids some basic common courtesy."
"I agree, but I don't know why they haven't taught her some manners. Ellie and her friend Dina were bullied by her, but it seemed they handled it well."
"What did they do?"
"Ignored her basically."
"Ignoring can only get you so far, Y/N. If you need me to step in, I will."
"I don't think you need to step in for me right now. I think I can handle it."
"I know you can, but there are times where an adult needs to step in and take things by the reigns."
"Understood, mom."
"Do you have homework?"
"Yeah," I said.
"I should let you get to it," my mother said.
I walked up towards my room and set my things down. I opened my bag and saw something that wasn't mine. I pulled it out and saw it was a notebook. It had a nice black leather cover. I opened the cover and saw there was a name written in it. It was Abby's notebook. Of all people, it had to be her's! How did this get in my bag? I looked in my bag to see I still had everything I had, but I don't know how this notebook was in my possession. I shouldn't do this, but I flipped open to the first page to see that she had written in it. I flipped through the pages to see that she had filled almost half of this notebook. I went back to the first page and saw it was dated back to her first year of high school.
I couldn't help myself and decided to read. I knew it was none of my business, but I at least could maybe get an understanding about Abby's behavior. I read through her first year of high school. That was when she was getting pushed around by upperclassmen based on her physical appearance. Back when she was becoming more and more muscular. They were saying how a girl shouldn't look like a guy muscular wise. But that was when she got onto the sports teams she is on now. However, she was really the only good female wrestler on the woman's team. She had pulled out a lot of wins for all of the teams. But even though she was winning with her team, she wasn't being recognized. And because of that, she felt like she wasn't good enough to be on the team. That she needed to do more. And in doing so, she felt left out at times during practices. Which led her to her self doubt. But when April came around, she met this guy named Owen. She had fallen in love with him and they started dating since July.
In her second year of high school, that was when she had made it to states. After that, it kind of went to her head. She became arrogant, but even though she was arrogant, she still had that self doubt and worry. And she feared that she would not be recognized when she made it to states by herself. But when she did, she became more arrogant. And because of her arrogance, Owen stopped dating her and broke things off in December. She grew furious and angry. She was angry at Owen, but she was angry with herself. When she came back to school that following semester, when someone mentioned Owen, she got hostile with them. Which then further added the self doubt and her self esteem issues. That was when she started to bully other kids. Most important, other couples or close friends. She had started with Ellie and Dina since they were very close friends, but it didn't work. She moved onto another set of people and then the next.
In the summer before her third year of high school, which was this year, she started to fall further into her self doubt and self esteem issues. But she couldn't reach out to anyone because they didn't know that side of her. She didn't want them to see that side of her. Because she was afraid she would end up alone again. She was afraid of letting other see her vulnerability. She was afraid that they would see her as mentally weak. That was the last entry. I was about to close it, but something slipped out from the back. It was a piece of folded paper. I opened it to where the piece of paper was sticking out. I opened the folded paper to see it was a note from Owen to Abby.
"Abby,
I know we've been dating for about 6 months now, but after you went to states and became a big name in the school, I just couldn't deal with the relationship anymore. I know it's not you, it is totally me. I just think we need to separate ourselves for a bit before we talk to one another. I just want you to know that the time we spent together was not wasted. You're not going to believe me, but it's the truth.
Your friend,
~Owen"
I flipped it over on the back to see there were words written on the back. They were big, black, and crooked.
"Worthless piece of shit."
"Not good enough even for him."
"Not good enough for anyone!"
"I will never find someone who will understand me!"
"He understood me!"
"Fuck, he never understood me."
"No one will."
After reading that, I felt I knew her a bit better.
