please keep in mind that english is NOT my first language. so, obviously there will be a few grammar errors along with the typos i missed. characters will also appear ooc because this story is set a few years from the current timeline. i also wrote this four years ago but i think out of all of my work from four years ago, this one's the most edited. so, it's definitely worth reading if you've read it before.

disclaimer: lowercase intended, not proofread, ooc, language

i do NOT own detective conan / case closed

here she was again. running away. shiho stood there in her gate waiting for her plane to board as she held her brand new passport with both of her hands. she found herself staring at it with a sense of unfamiliarity. a new name again, wasn't that great?

she still had half an hour left until she had to leave the place she called home. the reddish brown haired woman didn't know what to feel. maybe she felt relieved, knowing that she won't be in any danger, knowing they won't be able to find her. or she might feel like a failure, for running away from her fate, or however that detective would put it.

but she did know one thing; she is going to miss her loved ones dearly. she couldn't say goodbye to them as it went against the rules of the witness protection program. she knew it, but shiho miyano always broke the rules. and that's why, despite not being able to say goodbye to the professor and her friends, she left them letters and messages. she just hoped that she wouldn't get into any trouble for it.

after all, shiho didn't have a choice. she didn't have anything back in japan. she spent every day since the court hearing in constant agony, being absolutely petrified that one of the organization's members would get out of jail and get her. she just couldn't live like this, especially after the things she said for her court statement.

normally, she would've stayed as the 10-year-old ai haibara, as that identity was her best way of hiding from the organization but after they were brought down, ai recognized that she had two options: live forever as ai haibara, which was what she was leaning to or go back to being shiho miyano, which was inevitably forced upon her. she had to give a statement in court, otherwise there would be no proof that shiho miyano was still alive and she'd be just labeled as a "dead criminal that was on the run". she couldn't watch her entire family lineage go down like that. sure, she could've used temporary antidotes for the time being but it just didn't feel right to her. shiho had to reclaim some of her power. she had to prove that her sister dying for her didn't go to complete waste.

after returning to her real identity and with the organization locked up, shiho moved to her sister's second apartment, she started working at a pharmaceutical company and would visit the professor a few times a week. some days the detective boys were there too and she introduced herself to them as ai haibara's cousin who has to check up on the professor every now and then now that ai doesn't live with him anymore. then shiho's anxiety about the organization kept getting worse. she knew they were locked in supermax prisons and, technically, they wouldn't be able to get her. but something just made her feel uneasy. living alone scared shiho, she had nightmares, she would imagine sounds coming from outside; shiho was terrified and that's why she decided to stay with the professor again. but to her disappointment things didn't get any better. every time the professor came back home unannounced, she thought someone was breaking in. if someone walked behind her on the street for a bit too long, she'd force herself to take deep breaths to stop herself from having a panic attack. she just couldn't live like this.

now here she was; she had a soft smile forming on her lips as she thought about how much her life has changed over the last few years. she went from a person that worked all day and night alone in the dark lab without anyone to rely on, except for her older sister, to someone who had many friends and acquaintances. someone who actually enjoyed life and all it had to offer. someone who would risk her life for her loved ones.

and of course, shinichi was the main reason she was able to live this life for the past three years. shortly after the organization's downfall, ai was able to access all of her files and was able to create an antidote rather quickly. once she told conan about it, she got a very enthusiastic "thank you" from him and naturally, his first stop after taking the antidote was the mouri detective agency to meet ran and tell her that he was back for good this time. she was happy for him, but sad about part of their bond breaking. sad that at the end of the day, it's always been ran.

she loved japan, she really did. but after having spent so much of her life there working for one of the most dangerous underground organizations and being wanted by them for three years, she's had it.

her best option was to leave the country. off to a new start and all of that thanks to jodie's offer.

tokyo, japan 7am

kudo shinichi, the young savior of the japanese police force, woke up on a sunday morning by the annoying ringing of his phone.

he cursed himself for forgetting to put his phone on silent mode before heading to bed, but as soon as he noticed shiho's name in his notification bar, he was slightly alarmed. he knew the message must've been important as she never texted him this early.

"first of all, i don't feel the slightest bit sorry for waking you up.

second, since i have already finished my work in japan, i have decided to leave. now, don't stare at your screen like that. i know exactly what you're thinking about, kudo. but think about the positive aspects of this; you finally have your old life back and got rid of the evil-eyed yawny girl, her sarcasm, scary glances and useless paranoia. and i, for once, can finally live a peaceful life without you attracting dead bodies everywhere we go. thank you very much for the last three years with the professor and the detective boys. please take good care of them for me.

ps do NOT even think about looking for me. you're a great detective, but i doubt your skills are good enough to crack this case.

miyano shiho"

shinichi let out an emotionless chuckle. how could shiho leave them like that? completely cutting herself out of their lives without a prior warning. how could she leave the detective boys, the professor and him like that? like she didn't care about them at all.

of course, shinichi never admitted it but he has always cared about shiho a lot. she is his best friend and has been for the past three years. it was an unspoken pact they had. she's been with him through thick and thin. shiho was the only person on this planet that could truly understand him. he was able to talk with her about everything, ranging from serious topics like the black organization to silly childhood stories. shiho would always pay attention to everything he said and occasionally tease him. he didn't think he'd ever miss the banter between them, but it's been only five minutes since he found out she's leaving and he had already missed her terribly. he missed her friendship.

though, he had to admit that after the court case they hadn't been able to spend much time together but they were still friends, weren't they?
