I shook my head, closing my eyes as tears threatened to spill over.
"What do you want, Mark?" Ian said, his voice calm but edgy.
Mark tilted his head, his glasses smudged and glimmering in the pale light from the end of the hall. "I have your two friends. Jerome and Mitch, correct?" He smiled, furrowing his eyebrows and shrugged.
"JUST TELL US!" Marcia yelled, clenching her fist.
Mark held up his hands and batted an eyelash. "Calm it down, sweetie! We're not going to hurt them... More than we already have."
Adam shook his head and sighed. "Look, what do you want? Money, what?"
Mark pouted his lip and shook his head. "No money, just..."
"What?" I said, fear etching my voice. I felt like a coward. Ian was brave, so were Marcia and Adam. They weren't scared by this creep. I was scared. Fear coursed through my whole being. It was so much scarier than my fall.
"You." A strong voice called from behind us.
We all whipped around to see a suited and well dressed man pad slowly towards us.
"Where is everyone? Where is campus security?" Adam whispered.
"Oh, we took care of them." The man said, half-smiling.
Confused and dazed, I shook my head. "M-me?"
"Yes. You're coming with us."
"Who are you?" Ian spat.
The man just shrugged. "Call me James. I work for the Aires family..."
Bebe Aires! I felt my skin crawl as the pieces slowly fit together.
"T-the police." Adam said crossly.
The man ignored him. Two other beefy guys came to stand beside him. "Maria Welsh, come with us."
"No!" Ian yelled, clenching his fist.
"No." I repeated, but this time, it was to Ian. "It's okay, I'm coming."
