If only we knew what freedom could be
We take for granted a gift to us free
We don't understand what freedom is worth
Nor the truth of the world that gave us birthIf only we knew what freedom could be
That it could be crushed just like a small flea
We're taught that our past had fought all their heart
And thought it were ours 'til death do us partIf only we knew what freedom could be
We did not realize we must fight for thee
Instead we willingly gave it away
What fools we were to believe what they sayIf only we knew what freedom could be
For our children to live like you or me
Then we must stop fighting for red or blue
Put aside our differences and pull throughIf only we knew what freedom could be
Instead now the few, we beg and we plea
For without us all, our fight is futile
We need to act before things get hostileIf only we knew what freedom could be
We dumbly believe we are just so free
That we would give it away in crisis
It will not be returned to us pricelessIf only we knew what freedom could be
We expect that it be returned for free
But it will not be given up with ease
Now we beg it be returned to us pleaseIf only we knew what freedom could be
If only we knew how cruel it would be
When freedom is gone, given away, free
It's too late to see what freedom could be
