THE WOUND

CHAPTER 13

Making Brunswick stew was tough work . I had to take help from the recipe book. I diced the onions , garlic and melted the butter in a saucepan . Keeping the stove at medium heat , I added onions , garlic and saute until the onions were translucent .

" Why are you making Brunswick stew? It will take two hours and I am ravenous ."

" What is avanous? " My curious son asked who was sitting on the floor eating cookies Matt brought.

I glared at him .

" Well you should have eaten before you came here . It means hungry , Jim." Of course I was lying . I was preparing stew just for the four for us . Matt's cousin could eat it at night .

" And she calls her my best friend! " he said looking at Jim who was happy to be the attention holder .

" She , your momma! " Matt pointed at me ," ate my cookies and is keeping me hungry . Lord ."

" Don't speak Lord's name in vain and Jim drink the milk . I don't want to see it in the sink again ."

Jim pouted . He knew it sometimes worked on me . Sometimes , the key word here.

" He threw it ? " Matt asked tight lipped trying to control his laughter .

" Yes ." I said and turned to stir in the

cayenne pepper, black pepper, salt and sauce in the pan .

" You did that buddy . I was kidding , I mean joking . " Matt whispered to Jim .

What?

I turned again with the spatula in my hand. I had my mouth wide open .

" You told him what? " I screeched .

Matt looked at the Rolex on his wrist and grimaced.

" Shoot ! I am late for my ... ...meeting with the client . Bye Jim ." He kissed Jim on the cheek and stood up to go towards the front door . I caught the collar of his sweatshirt and pulled .

" No Raymond , you are going to have a meeting here with me. " I hissed .

I wasn't angry . Just wanted to tease him a little and also punish him for teaching bad things to my son .

" I am sorry Savvy ." He said rounding towards me and coming to his knees . His fingers on his ears pulling them and begging for mercy .

" I will do anything for you ." he said .

" Anything ? " I asked .

" Anything ." he nodded .

" Get me a movie we could watch on mute . Jim will sleep after twelve and today is Sunday so no tuition. " I said .

They were good times . We used to watch movies on mute and play the characters. Cassie , Me and Matt . Cassie wasn't here but it will still be fun .

" As you say ." his eyes glittered when he said that .

" and we will talk about yesterday ." I reminded him .
