Logan and I enjoyed a laid back breakfast and some play time with Fitz on Sunday morning. We had had a couple very happy days being a family. Our time together was strengthening our relationship.
Sitting across from me at the table,Logan had his head buried in his tablet. I could feel a vibration coming from him bouncing his knee. This was something he did when he was anxious.
"Logan?"
With his head still down, he answered,"Yeah, what is it, Ace?"
"What's wrong?"
He stopped reading and looked up at me. "You know me too well."
"Is it something with work or our upcoming visit with your parents?"
"Probably a little of both. I want the London office to continue to run smoothly after I transition to New York. And, well you know how insensitive my parents can be. I don't want you to feel uncomfortable around them."
I went to him and sat down in his lap. "I know the London office will be fine because you have the ability to get people on the right path for success. You know I'm a little older than when I first had to deal with Mitchum and Shira. I'll be fine. Okay?" Then, I gave him a little kiss on the lips.
"Thanks, Ace."
A couple of hours later we arrived at the foreboding mansion and even though I had tried to reassure Logan that I would be fine, he was still acting a little nervous. You just didn't ever know what was going to come out of Mitchum or Shira's mouths. Fitz was looking especially handsome, like his father, in his navy blue shorts and suspenders as well as white knee high socks with white leather shoes.
The door opened immediately as we rang the bell. Being ushered into the family room right away, I'm surprised to see Mitchum and Shira already seated. Honor and Josh were there as well.
"Rory, Logan, come in, come in," Mitchum belted out. "Would you like some refreshment?"
"I'll have ice water with lemon or lime," I answered. Logan had his usual Macallan.
Shira came over and sat beside me. I was stunned. She asked, "can I hold my grandson?"
"Sure," I answered.
She took Fitz in her arms and looked him over thoroughly. I knew she was eyeing every little detail of his outfit. She stood up and walked over to Mitchum. They both studied him keenly. Fitz just gave them his best smile.
"Rory, this is such a cute outfit on Fitz. You should have a portrait made in it for his first birthday. What a wonderful keepsake it would make."
I looked at Logan and we both weren't believing the words coming out of her mouth. She had given me a compliment.
"Mitchie, doesn't he look just like Logan when he was a baby, except for the blue eyes?"
"Yes, Shira, he does."
Shira was smitten by her grandson. My boy Fitz was going to charm her just like his daddy could.
"Logan, I hear that you've done a good job getting everything organized for the transition to New York. Are you ready to come home, son?"
As Logan and Mitchum got into a discussion about work, which usually happened, Shira came back to the sofa with Fitz. Honor joined us and Josh made his way to the guys. Honor jumped in asking, "mom, let me hold him. It's been a while since I had one this little."
"Rory, he really is the cutest baby and so happy. His smile is exactly like my baby brother's."
"That it is, Honor. He has been a delight, except of course when he was first born. You know those initial months are hard. But, I've loved being a mom."
"So, Rory, tell us. Have you and Logan discussed future marriage plans?," Shira piped in asking.
As I was about to choke on my sip of water, Logan had just joined us again. Hearing the question, he answered, "MOM, that is personal between Rory and me. We're going to couple's therapy and it has really helped. I can assure you that if and when we have any announcements to make you'll be one of the first to know."
The maid appeared and announced that lunch was served. We made our way to the dining room table.
I turned to Logan to ask if he would get the seat out of the car for Fitz to sit in.
Shira stated there was a high chair all set up for Fitz.
Logan and I sat at the table with our son between us in his 'Huntzberger' high chair. I reached into his diaper bag to get a couple of teething biscuits and a bib. I couldn't help thinking what words would be coming out of my mom's mouth if she were here.
"Fitz is cutting a new tooth. He'shad his lunch and this might keep him quiet while we eat."
Logan took the biscuits and unwrapped them. Fitz was acting excited by slapping the tray, eyes all wide and kicking his legs. "There you go buddy. A cookie." Fitz took it in his hand looked at Logan while biting down. He liked the feel and taste in his mouth. He slapped the tray again and said, "Da-da."
Logan lit up like a light bulb.
Shira jumped in saying, "Oh, Logan, how cute. He said Da-da."
"It's not the first time, Mom. Okay, folks, the shows over. My son will be as smart as his mother and learn many, many more words. Let's eat." Then, he looked at me and winked.
Dinner went off smoothly and I had a tiny little glass of champagne so that we could all toast Logan returning home.
We said our good-byes to all of them and made our way out to my car. "Logan, let me drive you to the airport. I don't mind."
"No, Ace, I've got Frank. You go on home."
I put Fitz in his car seat and stood up to give Logan a hug and kiss.
"Listen, Ace, I want to ask you something. There's going to be a going away party for me next weekend. Please consider coming. I'll send the company plane for you and Fitz. You could bring Amy or your mom. Whoever you like. What do you say?"
"Logan, that's asking a lot to take a one-year old all the way to London. Think of all I would have to bring with me."
"I'll get everything you'll need and have it in the apartment. Then, I'll have everything shipped home with my other stuff for my New York apartment. Won't you consider it, for me? I would really like to show you off to the London office. You never know who you might meet?"
"O--kay, I'll consider it. I'm not promising anything for sure, though."
"Great. I'll call you."
"Hey, wait just a minute, mister. What was that statement earlier tonight about 'if and when Rory and I have an announcement to make'? IF and when? What the hell does that mean?"
"Oh, you know, Ace. I don't like to show all my cards at one time."
"Logan Huntzberger. I know you learned your lesson about grand gestures. None of that is to ever take place again."
"You can bet your pretty, sweet ass that I won't ever be going that route again. Now I've got to go. I'm going to miss you this week."
"Give me a kiss, then."
He gave me the most, earth shattering kiss. He pulled away and headed for the limo, yelling, "God, you taste good, Ace. I love you."
I watched the limo disappear out of sight. Getting in my car and heading back to my house, I thought about Logan's request to come to London. We had so much mixed up history there. Maybe it would be good to address it head on. Logan Huntzberger could still turn my insides to jelly. After all these years he was still brilliant, beautiful and smarter than me. And, oh what a charmer he could be.
A/N: Should Rory go to London? Maybe they could have some good memories to take away, if she went. We'll see. Happy 4th of July to all my American readers. Wherever you are, I hope you are well and safe. Someday soon we'll be back to normal.
