PROMPT: Tongue

"Lick"

Seems like it was only yesterday

When I adopted you from the shelter

You were so afraid, shivering in the corner

Wary of anyone who tried to come close to you

That's okay, I thought.

I'm going to give you all the love you deserve.

I'll make sure that you feel safe

In this cruel and lonely world

Our first weeks together were hard

You didn't even want to look at me

I realized that you were a victim of abuse

And I felt sorry for all your suffering

As time went by, we eventually grew together

And finally you gave me a small lick

It was a small but significant sign that you trusted me

That gesture was enough to make me happy

Every day spent was filled with happiness,

Precious memories made

Smiles and laughter is all I remember

From all the time we had together

Fast forward to 10 years later,

I knew that our time left was short

So I tried to make the most of everyday

Every second, every single moment

As I finally laid you down to sleep,

You gave me one last lick

With that wide red tongue of yours

That radiated warmth and love with every slobbery kiss

I cried for now you are gone,

My buddy, my best friend

So thank you for everything; and even though I thought I was the one who saved you,

You were the one who saved me in the end
