I walked down a dimly lit hallway, each step I took caused echoes to bounce off the walls of the quiet, empty basement halls. Erwin and Levi were close behind me, Erwin holding the lantern and keys, and Levi came along to 'ensure everyone's safety' as he put it.

We were stopped by two guards when we reached the doors that I had assumed led to the cells. They pointed their weapons at us, but lowered them quickly when they recognized Levi and the commander. "Commander Erwin, Corporal Levi. Please pardon our discourtesy,  go ahead inside " Both of the guards hurriedly shuffled away from the door, permitting us entry and closing it behind us.

I shivered as cold air struck me without warning. "It's cold down here. I hope Eren's holding up alright."

"I'm sure he's just fine." Levi said.

Erwin led us down another empty corridor before stopping in front of another large door at the end. "The cells are behind here." Erwin unlocked the door, the old and rusty hinges squeaked loudly as it was pushed open.

I walked through the door first, Erwin held the door open for Levi and I before entering himself. I walked a few feet before turning to face the cell where my friend laid quietly in his cot.

"Eren?"

He looked up at me, a small smile spread across his face as he stood up and made his way to the cell bars, but the chains wrapped around his ankles and wrists where bound to the bed and kept him from doing so. I looked back at Erwin and Levi with a frown. I was angry that this was how my friend had to be treated. Erwin handed me the key and permitted me to enter.

I unlocked the large metal box lock and swung the door open. Before even thinking, I ran into Eren's arms where he attempted to wrap them around me. He nuzzled his face into the crook of my neck.

"Hey, y/n." He sounded burned out.

I half pulled away, our arms still interlocked as we looked at one another.

"You look like shit" I gave a soft, sad smile and he responded with a tired chuckle.

"These things aren't comfortable at all." He said as he gently kicked the cot causing the metal to rattle.

"Your trials today" I said.

"Yeah, I know. I haven't been able to rest these past three days, I've been so nervous."

Erwin and Levi walked into the cell with us and stood next to me.

"You have no reason to be nervous Eren" Erwin assured him.

"Right. Just tell the truth and we'll have your back the entire time" I added. I playfully ruffled his messy brown locks of hair to try and lift his spirits. I moved back to stand by Erwin and Levi.

Eren looked slightly puzzled. "You're not scared of me?"

"Of course not. You're still the same idiot  to me." I joked.

He smiled back, his eyes were glassy like they always got before he cried.

"Do you ever stop crying?" Levi asked condescendingly. I elbowed Levi to get him to knock it off, but all he did in response was his signature annoyed tongue click.

Our visit was short before we had to get going. Who knows how the trial will go and if I'll be able to see my friend again. I was worried that the last conversation I'd have with him would be one where he was chained up like an animal.

"Let's go then. We don't want to be late. We'll see you in the courtroom Eren"

Levi and I followed Erwin out of the cell shutting the barred door behind us. Levi locked the door and I gave a final glance back at Eren. The three of us left in silence to the courtroom just a few floors above where we were.
