Callie
I sat at the bus stop patiently waiting as impending storm clouds loomed overhead. I could feel the air temperature drop as a cool breeze whipped past me and the smell of rain filled the air. All I could do was hope the rain would hold off till my bus arrived. I looked down at my phone and noticed the bus was running late...again. Just fucking great! I sighed as I nervously tapped my foot against the bus bench. How do they expect people to make a living if the transit system sucks. I looked back up at the clouds as they blacked out the setting sun. A clash of thunder makes me jump as I glance back down the road hoping for some sign of being saved. Shit...ok bus where are you?
A drop of water hits my arm. I take shelter against a nearby building. The wind picks up as the rain starts to pour down. Ugh...who did I piss off in a past life. No matter what I do I can't catch a break.
"Really!" I glance up at the clouds cursing the heavens as the rain pours down harder. Thunder and lightning clashes overhead as I huddled close to the building's small makeshift awning. By the time the bus arrived it was a full-on monsoon. I ran to the bus getting saturated in the process. The driver looks at me and gives me an apologetic smile. Yeah, we're past that dude. I shake off the excess water as I take a seat. I get a glimpse of myself in the reflection in the glass. I look like a drown dog who's run from its bath. I wrap my arms around myself trying to warm up.
The duration of the 20 minute ride I attempt to wring out my clothes and hair. Yep...not helping, making it worse. Luckily, my work clothes are nice and dry in my locker at the club. When the bus drops me at my destination it's only light drizzle as I walk to the back entrance for marked 'Employees Only.'
I open my locker pulling out my clothes. I'm about to turn when a purse brushes past my head to the locker above me. "Well don't you look like shit, Callie!" I roll my eyes and grin and start walking towards the restroom to change. I turn and look back at Roxy and flip her off before trudging back to the restroom. When I come out Roxy is sitting in one of the worn out chairs in the employee break room picking at her nails. She glances back at me and grins. I shove my wet clothes into my locker and turn back to her. "Some of us can't afford a car, smart ass!" She laughs as she gets up. "You know I'd give you a ride if your stubborn ass would ask!" I shake my head as we walk to the main bar so we can set up for the night.
"Hey, Callie. Don't forget we have a meeting with the boss in five minutes." Ben, my manager walks up to my station smiling at me. Damnit, I forgot the boss was coming in today. I loved Phil the owner of the club, Phoenix. He was like a father to me. He offered me the job as soon as I turned 21 and I jumped at it. Waitressing didn't pay much. Phil was a regular at the diner I worked at and promised me a job the moment I was legal to serve alcohol.
"It's nice to see everyone. I just wanted to remind you that I will be leaving tomorrow for my first vacation in over ten years. Ben is in charge while I'm going to be gone. Ben, my boy please don't make me regret it!" Everyone laughs and cheers.
Ben leans over from where he was standing and nudges me. I give his shoulder a nudge back playfully. He's like a big brother to me. He looks after all of us, especially the girls to make sure we're safe while we're working. It can get pretty dicey sometimes with these creeps when they get drunk and on a power kick. After giving Phil a hug and joking with him, I head back to the main bar area with Roxy to finish setting up.
The Phoenix Club has been around for three years. Phil took it over from some deadbeat who ran the club into the ground and took the money and ran. He sunk in a pretty penny from his retirement and made it one of the most popular clubs for elitist pain in the asses. They were all high class society people, debutants, trust fund babies...you name it. I hated dealing with them, but they were good tippers at least.
