The last thing Minho expected to find on his impromptu, midnight grocery run was an injured hybrid huddling amongst the shopping carts.

The hybrid had wedged himself tightly between the wall and the carts. His knees were pulled up to his chest and he was trembling violently.

Minho had spotted the poor thing when he'd pulled one of the last carts in the row and he'd instantly squatted down so he could see the hybrid better. Minho couldn't make out any ears nestled amongst the layers of dirtied grey hair falling across the boy's forehead, but he could just trace the edge of a tail wrapped tightly around the boy's thigh. Minho craned his neck to get a better look as the boy whimpered quietly.

He was obviously shaken, and Minho couldn't tell for sure, but the hybrid appeared to be around his age. He was small though, much smaller than a boy well into his teen years should be.

Minho startled.

The whimpering had stopped, and the hybrid was staring directly at Minho, his wide brown eyes tinted by just a hint of pale blue.

He froze, not daring to move a muscle.

The boy's doe eyes were painfully decorated by deep purple ringlets. He had a cut following the ridge of his right cheekbone and the swells of his cheeks-which Minho guessed were naturally chubby-were sunken and sharp.

Minho's slim, midnight tail flicked languidly behind him, filling the otherwise silent air with a soft swooshing sound. He smiled warmly at the grey-haired boy, trying to squeeze every last drop he could muster of comforting pheromones into the tense air between them. The potent scent of fear wafted off the hybrid in waves, but it dimmed slightly as the boy took in the new smells and Minho's friendly smile.

"Hi." Minho started in a calm voice. Very slowly, he began to pull back the last few carts separating himself and the hybrid. "Are you lost, little guy?"

One of the wheels on the grocery cart Minho was shifting creaked.

The boy scrambled backwards, flattening himself against the wall as his eyes flickered between blue and deep brown. He shivered uncontrollably, grabbing onto the cart in front of him and gripping it with white knuckles. In the commotion, Minho finally caught a glimpse of the bushy squirrel tail wrapped around the boy's waist. Minho's eyes widened and he blew out a breath, beginning to understand.

"Hey, hey, it's alright." Minho hurried to soothe. He could hear the boy's panicked breathing and worried that he'd make himself sick if he continued. He placed his hands on his thighs, palms up, in a sign of submission.

"Breathe. It's ok. I'm not going to hurt you, I promise."

The hybrid was barely breathing but he seemed to at least be listening. He took in Minho's presence slowly - starting from the obsidian black ears burrowed in straightened brown hair, trailing down across his face, into what little of Minho's lower body was visible, before finally settling on his exposed palms.

Timidly, the boy met Minho's gaze and gave an almost imperceptible nod, as if confirming that he believed Minho would not harm him. His grip on the carts loosened.

Minho's nose twitched, a small whisp of fresh citrus blew with the wind. Minho smiled, happiness surging in his chest. They were making progress.

"Good." He crooned. "Do you want to come out from back there? I can't see you very well, and that hurts this big cat's heart."
