Faye flung herself onto her bed. "I feel like a whale."
Dick laughed and fell beside her. The sheets were softer than his own. "From the champagne or the cake?"
"Both."
The celebrations were roaring below, guests cheering and yelling as drinks were spilled and the band spun out a lively tune. Heels and dress shoes stamped in time to the beat, and Feng Mansion's walls trembled from the dancing that had kicked up a notch after the countdown.
"I blame the cake," Dick groaned. "I've never a pastry that big in my life."
She giggled, the sound slightly muffled by an arm that was flung over her forehead. "Dad went all out on the red velvet."
"Two stories. I swear it was two stories high."
"Three stories for me."
Faye turned, peeking through her eyelashes. Her face was bright red, and from the warmth in his cheeks, Dick could tell that his was the same shade too.
"It's too hot," he blurted out. "I need water."
"Water," Faye hummed. Suddenly, she jumped to her feet. "Let's go!"
"Where?"
She grabbed his hand, yanking him off the bed. "I wanted to swim, remember?"
"The pool?" Dick asked incredulously as he stumbled after Faye. Before he knew it, they were already out the door. "You want to go now? It's one in the morning!"
"That's exactly why we should do it."
Faye staggered forward, and one sparkling heel caught the other. Dick's hand shot forward. He grabbed her hand, intending to pull her upright, but lost his own balance instead. They crashed to the carpeted ground, a drunk, messy heap.
"Get off me...you...six-foot lump," Faye said in between her laughter.
Dick rolled off her, laughing so hard that his stomach hurt. "I'm sorry," he gasped. "Are you okay?"
"I will be once I get to the pool."
Faye sat up and pulled her heels off, tossing them to the side. She exhaled in relief. "I've been wearing those since nine in the morning. Now, come on!"
She offered her hand to Dick, who grasped it. He rose and wrapped an arm around her shoulder, while Faye supported his waist. Even though Dick thought he was a degree away from bursting into flames, he didn't push her away, despite how warm she was.
Door passed by in a blur as they continued down the hallway. Dick didn't keep count. All he knew was the feeling of her so close to him – he hadn't realized it, but he had missed the sensation ever since he had swung her around the city.
"We made it!"
They were standing by an oval pool. The lights from the ceramic walls underwater shone into the ceiling, twisting ribbons of white and blue illuminating the room. On the opposite side of where they had entered through a pair of oak doors, there was a sleek open bar, the remains of which had been cleared out when the last guests left to join the chaos in the ballroom.
"Wait, you're not wearing a swimsu - "
A loud whoop cut him off. Water drenched the bottom of his pants as Faye jumped into the pool, a rippling white figure submerged below.
She broke the surface with an elated gasp, black hair down the sides of her shoulders like paint rolling down a canvas. Faye grinned. "You coming in or not?"
"Seeing as I'm this soaked already," Dick said, kicking off his shoes and socks as quickly as he could. "I might as well. Cannonball!"
He leaped off the edge of the pool, flipping forward twice with his knees tucked. The water met him, submerging him in its coolness. Dick opened his eyes – the lights cast two dancing shadows on the floor, both moving like reeds in the wind.
