The rain hammered down. Forked summer lightning streaked across the grey sky in place of peaceful sunshine. Thunder crashed, rattling her bones as Faye ran, shoes pounding against the concrete. She weaved through the cargo containers, hair in wet strands around her face.
Where was he?
Faye could barely hear the sounds of battle, which made it hard to know where to run from. She needed to lose Klarion before she left the docks – he could not be seen downtown.
Then she smelt ash. Her legs gave a burst of energy, and she dive-rolled around a corner. Klarion's frustrated roar sounded from behind, his lethal bolt of crimson slicing a hole through a wired fence Faye had been heading towards.
The container she had her back against shook. She looked up to see a flying black cape. Robin leaped off the container, throwing a flashbang. Faye shielded her eyes as it went off, and heard the breath leave Klarion's lungs. Something heavy collided with the ground, followed by a pained curse from the Boy Wonder.
She darted around the side of the cargo, suppressing the temptation to watch. Robin was distracting him so she could get away, hopefully back to Feng Corp. That was well hidden enough that Klarion wouldn't be able to find her. First though, she needed to find the exit. The rows of never-ending cargo containers had turned the docks into a maze, made even worse with the threat of slipping in the rain.
Ash again. She made a sharp right. Another bellow of irritation and a searing mark on the side of the containers.
"Stop moving!"
Faye ignored his shriek and barreled on forward. Robin was nearby; she could hear the swish of his cape, although his footsteps were mostly camouflaged by the rain. He kept out of Klarion's sight well enough to surprise him, but how much damage Robin had really dealt, Faye didn't know.
Lightning flashed. It illuminated a sign, catching Faye's attention. Green with a white figure running in the direction of an arrow. The exit was nearby.
Faye followed it, faltering slightly as she turned, looking for the next sign. That second of hesitation was all it took for Klarion to appear directly in front of her, signature pentagram searing the ground beneath his feet.
"Caught you," he sneered with vicious mirth. His hands were glowing like the end of a hot poker, the rest of his body an unnaturally stark white. The steel birdarang had been removed, but the wound continued to bleed scalding black blood through the rips in his suit sleeve.
Faye spun round to run back the way she came, only for a red shield to wall it off, crunching mercilessly into the ground. Klarion cackled as Faye glared venomously at him, nowhere to go.
"You really are the definition of a crazy ex." She spat.
"Ex?" He snorted. "We're not over until I say we're over."
"Back off." A red and black blur dropped between them. Robin narrowed his eyes at Klarion, standing protectively in front of Faye.
"This is private, Blunder Boy," Klarion hissed. "None of your business."
"It became my business when you started trying to murder a civilian."
"Who said I was going to kill her?"
"You shot a bolt at my head!" Faye shouted shrilly.
"It was only to knock you out so I could bring you somewhere we could talk – without any nosy sidekicks butting in!"
He threw another crimson ball at Robin, who tossed a smoke bomb to meet it halfway. The bomb exploded along with Klarion's red magic; white smoke obscured the world as if a cloud had fallen to earth. A gloved hand grasped her own, and Faye let Robin lead her, both running out of the fog.
