The second the bell rang, cheers erupted and roared so loud they drowned out the melodious jingle. Students threw their ties into the air as if they were already graduating, excited and relieved chatter dissipating the previously concentrated silence. They raced out of the classrooms, a dam being broken, and part of that rushing water was Dick and Barbara, whose smiles seemed tighter than the rest.
"What are we going to do?" She asked, voice so low only Dick could hear.
"I don't know," he admitted. Thinking things over until the sun rose had done nothing to clear his head. "All I know for sure is that I'm going to spend the rest of the weekend with her."
Barbara bristled. "Even after we found out she's been..." He sent her a sharp look that might have been sharper than necessary, for she immediately fell silent and looked away.
They approached Dick's locker a step behind the others, who were already gleefully flinging textbooks and notes over their shoulders. Unconsciously, Dick looked around for Faye. He spotted her a few lockers away, putting on lip gloss with the mirror she had hung on the door.
Dick watched her smack her lips. Her eyes flickered to his, and her reflection grinned at him. He smiled back, slightly embarrassed that she had caught him staring.
"Dick?" Barbara said loudly.
"Hmm?" He half-turned away from Faye, who was walking towards him.
"Remember." Barbara gave him a stern, narrowed gaze before making her way to her own locker, eager to leave Faye's presence. As if he could forget. He'd certainly tried to.
As Faye arrived in front of Dick, she watched Barbara leave with raised eyebrows. "Another date, I see."
"What? No!"
"Then what was Barbara telling you to remember?"
"Nothing," Dick insisted. "She was just talking about this seminar for Hudson University."
"Hudson," Faye mused. "I didn't know you were interested."
"I only just started doing research." That was true – the first time he had glanced at the prestigious college in New Carthage was about a week before, procrastinating in the middle of studying for his Biology final. After speaking with the cashier though, he was almost sure it was the place he was looking for.
"More than what I've done anyway. The seminar isn't going to interfere with our plans, is it?"
"You mean your plans to punch the hell out of me again, right?"
"The only way I could do that is if you let me. You let me land punches so often."
"Not always. You caught me on the jaw last week."
"That was just a lucky shot. Still can't do a backflip, although sparring is more fun, no matter how much I suck at it."
"You're brilliant, Faye." Dick said warmly. "Even if you haven't beaten me yet, you're still really good."
"Thanks, Grayson." She winked. "I know."
Dick gave a half-hearted laugh. He still didn't really know what to think, and her presence was making it worse. He should be on guard, thinking how to best wring a confession out of her. Faye's conversation with her mother at Feng Corp had proved her guilt, and their alliance with the Light – it explained why Slade had been in Gotham, as well as the presence of magic throughout the case.
Klarion, Dick thought bitterly. He was more focused on that rather than Faye's hand in the murders, which made him feel guilty enough, yet his emotions were also muddled in that regard. Dick should have felt betrayed that Faye had been two-timing him, but perhaps even she didn't know she had been leading him on. Besides, they weren't together – who was he to be furious?
