"Turns out we didn't need to go to Central Park after all," Faye grinned. She was holding a large white bunny that Dick had won from a stall to her chest, and her legs were swinging from where they hung over the edge of her seat.
He chuckled, placing his chin on the head of the identical bunny that Faye had won. They had swapped because he thought it was more romantic – of course, he didn't really say that:
"Why are we doing this again? They look the same."
"I don't want you to forget who gave you the best night of your life."
"That's a stretch, but you know what? Fine. Mine's got a weird stain on it anyways."
They had gone on every ride in the Amusement Pier, played at each stall and had stuffed their faces with all the food there was on offer. Now, at midnight, they were on top of the ferris wheel, which was tall enough for them to see most of Gotham's sparkling buildings and glinting lights in the distance. Dick had been on higher places, but knowing that he wasn't on a mission made up for the slightly less grandiose view.
In fact, he thought as he glanced at the girl beside him, whose eyes were wide open as she soaked up the city that was still new to her, being with Faye made it better.
"I told you it would be fun, and I also told you that carnival popcorn is the best."
Faye laughed. "You tell me a lot of things, Grayson. This time you just happen to be right."
"Oh, come on, you had a good time," he nudged her teasingly with his elbow. "The fact that you're smiling like an idiot right now is proof enough."
And she was. For once, Faye wasn't smirking or giving him a sarcastic grin. Her lips were curled upwards in a smile that was brighter than any that Dick had seen in the paper.
"Alright, don't rub it in." Her eyes suddenly widened. "Hey, now that you've shown me a good time, I think it's time I return the favor."
"Faye, you don't have to - "
"A deal's a deal. It's not fair if you give me something and I don't do the same."
A deal. The words echoed in Dick's head, but before his heart could sink, he shoved it to the back of his mind to pay attention to what Faye was saying:
"Dad convinced Mom to throw a welcome party in our ballroom. You and your dad are going to come."
"You're telling me that I wasn't on the guest list in the first place?"
"Of course you are, don't be an idiot. But now, while everyone else is stuck in the ballroom, we are going to the rooftop."
"What, are you keeping people captive?"
"No, they're just confined to the main hall and the driveway. It's the rest of the house they can't see. I don't want people poking around my room, and Mom's got our security team guarding the entrances to the other rooms."
He chuckled, trying to hide the butterflies in his stomach. Dick would have never dared to think that he meant so much to Faye. "Well, I'm honored."
"As you should be. Can you drink?"
Dick didn't know what answer she was looking for, so he gave her the truth. "Yes, but Dad probably won't let me."
"Who says your dad is going to see?" Faye grinned mischievously. Dick found it contagious, and a grin of his own grew on his face. Nonetheless, he sighed in mock exasperation.
"Faye..."
"Hey, you don't have to drink if you don't want to." Faye said, holding up her hands in surrender. "I'm not pressuring you to do anything. You're one of the few people who doesn't need alcohol to be fun."
