"Grayson!"
Dick peered over the top of his locker door. He knew it wasn't Faye, because she would have just greeted him with a witty one-liner bordering on insult, and he knew it wasn't Barbara, because she had stopped talking to him.
Sure enough, it was Sammy Briggs, smiling her famously nausea-inducing smile, Marie Harding beside her. "Hey, Dick."
"Hi, Sammy," he said, suppressing a sigh. "What's up?"
"I was just wondering if you've heard about the Feng Party - "
"And if you know who's on the guest list." Marie finished her best friend's sentence.
Dick raised an eyebrow. "How did you know I was going?"
"You're Bruce Wayne's ward," Sammy rolled her eyes. "Even if you weren't Faye's boyfriend, you'd still get an invitation."
Dick blushed. "I'm not her boyfriend."
"Whatever," Marie said dismissively. "We just want to know if the Fengs are done sending out invites."
It was like a light went on in his head. Dick understood why they were asking him – neither Sammy nor Marie had gotten an invitation, and they were in denial.
"Um, I don't know," he sheepishly scratched the back of his head. "I guess you'd have to ask Faye."
"Like she'd talk to us," Sammy rolled her eyes again. It was getting annoying. "Come on, she tells you everything."
Not really. Dick thought. "I'm really sorry, guys, but I don't know. I'm sure if you ask nicely, Faye will tell you."
"I'll save you the trouble," a flippant voice said from their left. "The two of you aren't invited."
Sammy and Marie's faces both fell. They seemed to deflate, pride instead of air going out of their lungs. A hand grabbed Dick's wrist. "Come on."
As Faye dragged him away, Dick glanced backwards to see a furious Sammy and a dejected Marie, both burning with shame. "Did you really have to do that?"
"They were prying," she answered, brown locks bouncing. "And I was only telling the truth."
"You didn't have to do it in front of everyone," Dick muttered. He was right – the rest of the student body had been watching their exchange, and he couldn't imagine how humiliated Sammy and Marie were. "They didn't deserve that."
"Plenty of people don't deserve what they get; Briggs and Harding are among the most privileged."
"You're including yourself in that category."
"I'm richer."
Usually, Dick would have laughed at her unfiltered comment, but today, it didn't sound as funny as it normally did.
They entered the science lab, taking their usual seats at the back of the room. Faye swung her handbag onto the table. It was a dark magenta crocodile skin, and Dick had never seen it before.
"You got that in Paris?"
Faye smirked. "This and a whole lot of other goodies you'll see at the party."
"How much did you end up buying?"
"My jet was twice as heavy on the return flight, if that gives you some insight."
Dick whistled. "I wouldn't have lasted a day shopping with you."
"I'm not that bad," Faye argued. "My father's worse. The two-day party was his idea."
