Lightbulb x Paintbrush
HumanizedTo The Person Reading This,
You see, in our world, there are just, a few people who can see something special. It's a very rare circumstance. It's called "The Red String of Fate Eyesight", or "the special eyesight". Only very few people have it. I'm one of the few people. I've been getting soulmates together. A lot like a.. living cupid. The people who can see the string, can cut one's string off, and tie it to another person. A lot like changing their soulmate to someone else. I don't do that... But...
There was this one time.. When.. I had change.. and alter someone's soulmate, in order for them to live happily with their beloved one. I thought about the consequences, and told them if they were sure. They accepted the consequences and so, I went ahead and... altered it. I still remember the exact story line. I've replayed it inside my head over and over. And it's never disappeared. So I'm writing to you now about the incident. I'm sorry I can't speak to you in person, as it merely would be impossible. I will tell you about the story. And you will finally understand the... the job I had to do, to make them feel happy and to change fate. You shouldn't change fate. That isn't how it's set out.
Anyway, here's the story...
Basically, when I was younger, I had a best friend. They weren't specific on their gender, which I was perfectly fine with. They were called Paintbrush. They knew I had the Red String of Fate eyesight, and always liked to help me with the cupid task... They enjoyed hanging out with me and Baxter. My pet crab. Your generation probably has pet sharks and stuff now..
Paintbrush has been there for me since day one, ever since we met in that park. You see, I don't remember much that we did. All I know is that I met them through something bad, and we just.. connected. I've spent at least 20 years by their side, knowing they will be with me throughout the entire years. It seems like a long time, but, it really wasn't. Everything went so fast, I wish I could have another try. It was like a rollercoaster...
One day, we were strolling to our favorite cafe. Of course, they were with me. I ordered a milkshake, and they ordered a coffee. We sat down, and talked about things. Then the waitress came over and gave us our respective drinks. The waitress had a dress showing more skin than I ever would, her hair, a perfect shade of red, and her skin, a perfect tanned color. Her red sunset eyes. Paintbrush noticed the girl, and their cheeks went a slight tint color...
"Oh! Hello!" They'd say.
"Hello! How was your day?" She'd say.
And they seemed to... connect.
They'd connect with her more than they did me...
Since that day though. Paintbrush stopped hanging out with me:
"Painty? Are you busy? Do you wanna hang out? Y'know, get some of that ice cream that opened down the street?" I'd say, cheerfully.
"I'm a bit busy with Match, I'm sorry." They'd reply.Every.
"Painty?"
"I'm busy, sorry!"Single.
"Hey-"
"I promise next time, Lightbulb!"Time.
"Painty..?"
"Hey Lightbulb, let's hang out!"
"Reall-"
"Painty!!~ I'm hungry~" I'd her hear voice on the other side of the phone.
"We can go outside to that restaurant if you'd like." They'd say, giving their attention to her.
"Yay!!~" She'd say.
"Sorry Lightbulb, maybe next time?" They'd say, and hang up.Without a word from me. No goodbye, no see you later.
Eventually, time passed.
We grew up.At the same time, Paintbrush and Match started dating.
I was happy for them...
I wanted Paintbrush to be happy... Surely that's what I wanted, right?I noticed how... how happy Paintbrush looked with her. It took a while to understand my own feelings. I came to the conclusion that I loved Paintbrush. But of course, they were already happy. So I kept my feelings to myself. I never spoke a word about it. All I did was think about them, what we could've been if I told them. Would they be happy I loved them too, or would they push me away?
I dread the thought of them leaving me. Our 10 year long, friendship... All thrown into the dust.
The next 10 years... was interesting.
They both hung out all the time... Without me.
I tried to tell myself I was happy for them. That it was what I wanted for Painty to be happy.
They told me they were dating...For 5 years now.
Time went by so fast... that I couldn't even- I couldn't keep track.
It felt like yesterday when they were just dating. Next thing you know... They're getting married. Yes, you heard me right. They were getting ready to get married.I couldn't believe it.
Now, listen closely. Remember when I said Painty knew my red string eyesight?
Painty said that they want their original soulmate's string to be cut off, and to be re-attached to Match on their wedding day. I accepted my task. Their wedding day finally came, I noticed they'd been sweating a lot, being very nervous. I prepared them for their big day. Smartening up their suit, even putting on a small bow tie similar to Baxter's. I put some make up for them, and others. Then came the big moment.
"Paintbrush Canvas, do you take Match Stick to be your lawfully wedded wife?"
"I do."
"Match Stick, do you take Paintbrush Canvas to be your lawfully wedded husband/wife?"
"I do."
"You may now kiss the bride."
And... They kissed. No hesitation at all. Then they both turned to me."Lightbulb?" said Paintbrush.
"Y-yes?" I'd reply.
"Could you cut mine and Match's string, and attach it together?" They'd say.
"Of course." I'd say.Painty offered their pinkie, so I cut the string. Match would offer hers too, and I'd cut it. Then tie the two together.
If you're reading this, that means I've lost my memory. I've been abroad to visit different countries to fulfill the last bits of happiness in my heart. I may have lost you, but I don't mind, as long as you are happy with your life, Painty. I hope you understand why I've been so distant after your marriage day. I had feelings for you, I was too afraid to tell you. I was scared you'd push me away. I was scared I'd get in between you and Match, and I was too afraid I'd get hurt emotionally. So I left without a goodbye. And I'm sorry for the past few years we haven't spoken. Maybe I should've told you before I left, but my guts just told me I wasn't ready.
I suppose I could tell you the secret I've been hiding for the 20 years we've been friends. I have checked your original soulmate, and Match's. Of course, before you and her got married. Match's original soulmate didn't show up. Maybe he/she died of some cause? Because she didn't have a red string attached to her pinkie. It was black. And yours?
Your soulmate originally was me.
Yours Sincerely, Lightbulb

Doctor's Note: She had brain cancer. Luckily, we were able to remove it, but some of her memory cells were removed. Meaning she won't be able to remember certain things. We suggested for her to write a letter to the people she loved beforehand... She only wrote one letter.
I'm sorry this happened. She's happy and well again.~The Next Day~
"Lightbulb?" Said a familiar voice.
"Huh?" She turns around.
"Lightbulb!" The stranger hugs her.
"Who are you?" She says, smiling nervously.
"I'm Paintbrush." They said, "we were friends once."
"Oh, I see." She said, smiling.
"Do you want to hang out?" They chuckled.
"Hm, alright." She looks up to their eyes, and suddenly...They connected... just like before.
End.
