The next morning, I avoided Javier like the plague. I didn't want to even think about the thousands of thoughts flying through my head. To Grimshaw's surprise, I asked for extra work to help keep my mind off of things. I didn't know if anyone had spotted Javier and me yesterday. To my dismay, the girls certainly did.

"How's lover boy?" Karen smirked.

"You're one to talk. Everyone's seen you and Sean together."

"But the reality of it is that I hate him. I only ever like him when we're drunk, anyways. You, madam, did not seem drunk."

"Does the whole camp not know yet or something? Javier had to go into town to save my sorry ass, not because he actually gives a damn."

Mary-Beth nudged my arm. "Sure, you keep telling yourself that. Why did you end up sitting with him for an hour after you got back, then?"

"If you must know," I said, rolling my eyes, "some shit happened in town. Apparently, I was drunk enough for some fools to think they could take advantage of me." I bit the inside of my cheek to keep myself grounded. "I'm gonna go see if Arthur's got any manual labor or somethin'. Y'all are ridiculous." I gave a little laugh at that and shook my head.

I finally spotted the cowboy taking hay over to the horses.

"Hey, cowpoke. Got any work for me?"

Arthur turned around. "What, you already finish Grimshaw's stuff?"

"Nah. The girls were bein' obnoxious is all."

Arthur gave me a knowing glance. "Damn, not you too!"

"I'm just sayin'," the cowboy shrugged, "they got good reason to."

"Shut up, Arthur. Do ya have work or no?" I put my hands on my hips and jokingly glared up at him.

"Wanna come run a job with me? Sean told me about a stage comin' out of Blackwater. Reckon we can hit it as it crosses the river."

"Oh my god yes, and have I mentioned yes?"

Arthur grinned at my enthusiasm. "Hold your horses there, girl. You're gonna need to be calm on this job. Now, I wanted ya to be the distraction, but Sean says you're good enough to really help hold 'em up."

"Because I'm a lady. Great. Do you wanna be the actor?" I prodded my finger into his chest. "I'm guessin' no."

"You got no idea. You wouldn't believe how many times Hosea's had me be a little distraction on one of his cons. Hell, I don't even believe it." Arthur shook his head as if trying to clear the memories from it. "Anyways, we'll be leavin' in a little while. You can grab some ammunition by my tent if you need some."

"Thanks, Arthur." I gave a little wave and scurried over to his tent. I picked up a couple boxes each of repeater cartridges, shotgun shells, and rifle cartridges. I noticed a few green glass bottles sitting on a barrel next to Arthur's tent. I picked one up, wondering what it was.

"Aye, careful, Adelia. Ya could set the whole bloody camp on fire with that." Sean snatched the bottle out of my hand and set it back on the barrel.

"Why, what is it?"

"You're tellin' me that a lady who's been on the run as long as you have doesn't know what a fire bottle is? C'mon, Adelia. Ya gotta know what it is!"
