Life kicks you around sometimes. It scares you and it beates you up. But there's one day when you realise you're not just one survivor, you're a fighter and you're tougher than anything life throws in your way.

Chapter 5: What Makes Us Human

(A/N: Picture of Ashley above)

Ashley's POV

"What the hell are you doing? Did you hit your head or something, woman?" Blaze scowls at me as I try to break-open the lock for what seems like the fiftieth time.

"Yeah? Well, at least I'm trying to get us out of here! You are standing there doing nothing." I scowl back at him.

"Fine!" He pushes me back and kicks the door hard, real hard. I cross my fingers and wish that it would open. But did it? Nope.

"Happy now?" He turns round and looks at me.

"Ugh! Whatever." I roll my eyes. I turn on my heels and walk in the opposite direction, away from him.

'Oh, come on! There has to be a way out somewhere! Think!' I tell myself, frustrated.

I turn left in some hallway and keep walking straight, at the end of the hallway, I take a left and then a right. I reach a dark hallway and squirt my eyes to adjust them in the dark.

"Okay, I'm scared." I tell myself. 'You wish Blaze was here, right?' My sub conscience adds. As if on cue, I saw a figure looming around, going in classrooms and then coming out, making it look as if he were trying to find something, or, better yet, someone.

"Blaze?" I called out, walking towards the figure. "Is that you?"

I was halfway through the hallway when I felt a sudden tug on my wrist, resulting in me falling sideways. But before I could hit the ground, two strong arms lifted me and crushed me in their body, trying to pull me in. I open my mouth to scream but a large hand on my mouth stops me from doing so.

"Shut up. It's me, Blaze." One of his arms around my waist, the other still on my mouth. "I'm gonna remove my hand and you're gonna stay quiet. Yeah?" I nod my head in response. He removes his hand and wraps it around my waist.

He pulls me in closer, "The guy you saw was Jared." My eyes widen in fear and I shrink back into him. "It's okay. Nothing's gonna happen to you. I won't let anything happen to you." He removed one of his hands from around me and put it behind him, silently twisting it. I scrunched my eyebrows in confusion and then realised that there was a door behind us and that he was trying to open it. He took a step backward, pulling me in with him.

He quietly closed the door behind him and left me. "You okay?" He turned around and started the windows while running his hands through his hair, his back facing me.

"Yeah," I say and lean against the wall, "Thanks." He nods his head, still not looking at me.

Suddenly, he lunges at me and takes me down on the ground with him.

"What the-" I start but am cut off with the creaking sound of the door opening.

Blaze pulls me back so that I was out of view. "Shush." The door opens wide and Jared peeks in, glancing around the room. After he's done, he pushes his head back out and slams the door shut.

"Oh," I say when I realised that he saved me from Jared. Yet again. "Thanks. Again."

He gives me a mere nod and I huff, realising that going out right now isn't a safe option. I walk over to the teacher's table and slump down on it.
