Sunday, June 1st (6:20 a.m.)
I opened my eyes to find a freckled face lying next to me. It was Kadron, my boyfriend. I smiled and sat up, seeing now that both he and I were on the floor in the makeshift bed that I had made for myself the night prior.
I had told Kadron that he should get some actually decent sleep on my bed, and that I would sleep on the floor for the night. Of course, he refused, and we both ended up cuddling on the ground.
I was surprised to have not had any dreams recently. After all that had happened in the past six months, my dreams had suddenly stopped the night that Cassie was turned to stone.
That witch had messed with my friends and I for months, all for revenge against what my friend Rodan had done to her family in Michigan. We all fought as well as we could against her, and in the end, Rodan had ended up turning her into a statue.
Kris had nearly lost his left arm in that battle. He had been trying to protect me since Rodan turned dragon, lost his mind, and flew to attack me. Cassie had spells on both me and Rodan at the time, and it was horrible to see what power she had over us and just how far she could go to hurt the ones I loved.
It made me sick to know I could so easily be made into a pawn in her terrible game. The worst part was how I couldn't even fight back.
Since that night 2 months ago, Kris and Rodan grew closer and began dating around the same time that Kadron and I had started our relationship. Neri, Rodan's 13-year-old sister, had come to Wisconsin from their home back in Michigan to tell us that Kadron and Rodan's friend was coming with important news.
Again, 2 months had passed.
Their friend hadn't arrived yet, which worried Kadron to no end. He was constantly anxious that something might have happened to them on their way here. Since he was so short tempered by nature, it got worse under stress. Many nights have been spent where I needed to calm him down so he wouldn't set my house on fire.
Our school had let out last Wednesday, and we still tried to keep our hopes up to welcome our guest to my house and the hideout.
I felt a hand nudge mine. I looked down to my side to see Kadron, a sleepy smile on his face. I smiled back.
"Good morning Sleeping Beauty."
He rolled his eyes and swung his pillow at my side. I fell onto him with a giggle, and he wrapped his strong arms around me in a tight embrace, kissing my cheek lightly.
"Mornin' sunshine. How'd you sleep? Any dreams?"
I shook my head, kissing his forehead.
"Nope. Nothing."
"That's good." I looked into his forest green eyes, then let my eyes trace along the scar that ran across his face, from his right eyebrow down to under his left eye. It seemed to be more prominent than it usually was.
He had never told me about it before. I made a mental note to ask him later.
My hands ran through his naturally messy caramel brown hair, failing to get rid of his bed head. I couldn't stop looking at his amazing face.
He started blushing and looked away, brooding slightly.
"What? Why are you staring? Did something happen to my face? You know, it's kinda creepy. Stop it."
"Oh, sorry. I'm just happy you're here with me." He blushed harder, and I chuckled.
On the outside, Kadron was tough, loud and always ready to fight. When it came to his friends and me, however, he was kind, caring, and even a little shy. I loved him.
"Let's go eat breakfast. What do you want?" My face lit up at his words.
"Pancakes!!" I jumped up and down on the air mattress, making everything shift and eventually fall off, including Kadron. He shook his head laughing as he got up off of the floor, grabbing my hand to pull me up. He pecked my cheek and led me downstairs to the kitchen.
We walked into the kitchen to see that Rodan and Kris were already awake, sitting at the counter eating cereal, and Neri was in the living room watching tv. Rodan looked up and smiled.
"Hey guys! How's it hangin'?"
Kris, Kadron, and I looked at each other, then burst into laughter. Rodan frowned.
"W-what? Isn't that how people greet their friends? Did I do it wrong?" He flushed and looked down. I answered.
"No, you're fine. That is how you greet someone, but it doesn't really sound right coming from you. I guess we're just used to your awkward hellos. It's just a little different."
"Geez, fine. Hello, and g-good morning."
Kris chuckled at his boyfriend's beet red face.
"Hey, I thought it was cute. I like the change." At this, Rodan's face miraculously turned even redder, and he moved to hide it behind the cereal box on the counter.
Kris smiled, then his eyes widened suddenly, shooting a glare in Neri's direction.
"Damnit, Neri! Get out of my head!"
"Clean your dirty mind then! Did you forget that you're dating my brother?" she shot back from the couch, not even turning her head to face him.
Rodan abruptly got up from his seat, a loud scraping sound following as he pushed the stool away from the counter. He left the room quickly to go into the basement, where he and Kris slept.
"W-wait, Rodan come back!" Kris followed after him, trying desperately to repair the situation.
Kadron chuckled.
"Oh, boy."
I nodded.
"Oh boy indeed. Now, PANCAKES!" Kadron smirked and laughed.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm on it."
