. . .

"I hate you, Stoll!"

"Right back atcha, Katie-kat!"

"Don't call me that-"

"Don't call you what, Katie-kat?"

Oh, brother.

I rolled my eyes at Connor from across the pavilion, and he returned the gesture. If our siblings were going to be any more oblivious, I thought we may have both exploded.

"You're so annoying!"

"You're so annoying!"

"Stop copying me-"

"Stop copying me!"

Oh, for all the gods above! I made eye contact with Connor again and nodded my head towards the columned entrance of the pavilion. I stood up and he followed me.

"I can't believe them," I groaned, leaning back on a column.

"I know." Connor kicked his foot, stirring some dirt around. "I'm gonna throw up if I have to hear one more 'Gods, Katie's so annoying' in the cabin."

"How do you think I feel?" I whined, watching as Travis trailed behind Katie to get in line for breakfast. "Katie hasn't stopped talking about him since the very beginning."

The two were clearly made for each other, and Connor and I both knew it. Hades, the whole camp knew it. We'd suffered through our respective siblings complaining about the other for years, but it seemed to have gotten worse the past month or so. They constantly bickered about the stupidest things (even for them) and then turned to us to talk our ears off about it.

It was really annoying, to say the least.

"If they'd just stop being so stubborn..." I thought aloud, shaking my head. "It would almost be more bearable if they were all romantic and stuff. At least they'd be together and we wouldn't have to hear about it anymore."

I looked at Connor for affirmation, but I found a new light in his eyes.

"...or if they were put in a position where they had to address their feelings," he followed up, a grin spreading across his mischievous face.

I couldn't stomp out the spark of intrigue as I leaned in. "What were you thinking?"

Now, in all my years of being at camp and complaining to Connor about Katie and Travis, I'd never been around him long enough for a prank to ensue. I'd never been the brunt of one, and I'd never participated in one.

Until today.

"This stuff's really finicky," I huffed as I struggled to tie another knot into the attachment. "I almost respect you guys for doing this to Katie every day."

"I don't even do anything for that junk." Connor scoffed and moved to help me tie it off. "It's all Travis."

Of course it was.

If habit proved anything, then Katie would have been walking from the strawberry fields about now - I'd skipped my shift that afternoon to help Connor with our plan. And, if habit still proved anything, Travis would have been trailing behind Katie with a goofy smile on his face as he desperately tried to make her laugh.

She always walked up to our cabin and slammed the door in his face.

She wouldn't get that far, today.

"-and then he said, 'sir, this is a McDonald's'," Travis' laugh boomed from behind the ridge, and Connor motioned for me to hide behind the Poseidon cabin.

I sneaked to crouch behind the wall and wait.

"That's stupid," came my sister's voice. "How do you confuse a magic shop with a McDonald's?"

"It's easier than you may think. Hey, what's this-"

Connor crossed his fingers in front of his face, and I felt my own heart pick up. Surely a stupid pile of leaves would be too obvious. Travis had dubbed himself the "king of the pranks" ages ago, and I now worried about him recognizing the prank from miles away.

"...A pile of leaves?" Katie offered, finishing Travis' fizzled out thought.

"Chiron really meant he'd make the bubble more realistic, huh?"

I peeked around the corner and saw Travis pointing at the trees around the Demeter cabin, which were all turning shades of orange and red. "One of your siblings must've raked them up."

Katie rolled her eyes, and at that, I ducked behind the cabin wall again. I could see why this was exciting to the Hermes cabin - waiting for the prank to fall through was a rush of adrenaline.

"We should jump in them," was Travis' next thought, and Connor silently snorted.

"No way." I could almost see Katie's face of disgust in my mind.

"C'mon, Katie-kat! Do you ever have fun?"

"Yeah, and none of it is with you."

Travis laughed again, and I heard Katie squeak. "I'm a joy to be around, Kates, come on!"

Once more, I edged around the corner to see that Travis had grabbed Katie's hand and tugged her towards the leaves with a running start. Connor pulled me back and, with a dead serious face, shook his head. They can't see us, he mouthed.

I inched closer against the wall.

The older Stoll burst into fits of giggles, and Connor put a hand over his mouth to conceal his own. A surge of giddiness spurred me to smile, and I tapped my fingers against the wall.

The next sounds to be heard followed each other in sporadic succession.

Katie said, "Stop it, Stoll!"

Travis said, "No way!"

And the leaves, well, they didn't say anything as Travis yanked my sister into them. All they did was fall away for our net to snatch up the unsuspecting duo into the air.

The twang of the net signaled a yelp from Katie, and a shout from Travis.

"Connor!" they simultaneously screeched.

At that, Connor drug me out from behind the cabin to reveal ourselves. Their faces were priceless - Travis' mouth hung open and Katie's eyes squinted to form pure anger.

Their limbs tangled up with each other, and they squirmed to get away. But much to their dismay (and my entertainment) they couldn't escape each other with the net forcing them together. The betrayal painted on both of them had be rolling in laughter.

"We have a proposition for you two," Connor declared, and thus the prank had been initiated.

This was gonna be so good.
