. . .
Today was much different than most days.
I usually started my mornings awakened by a familiar scream that sounded like music to my ears, followed by the same voice demanding that I exit my cabin to face unbridled wrath.
I usually strolled outside to see other campers surrounding the pathway to the Demeter cabin. I would strike a nonchalant pose and wait for my screeching alarm clock to make an appearance, the smirk I knew she hated painted across my face.
Ah, mornings.
But today was not the usual morning.
I hadn't pranked her.
Call it a lapse in judgement, or a brief moment of slacking off, but I couldn't find it in me to care about setting up a prank last night. The younger Hermes kids had been especially energetic, and I'd ended up spending most of the evening and night getting them to calm down. By the time Connor and I finally had them mostly settled, I couldn't have cared less if Katie was greeted with an unpleasant surprise in the morning.
I had just wanted sleep.
Now, though I woke up around the time Katie would've been awake to yell at me, I found the air devoid of shouts and curses to my name. Instead, Connor's snoring was all that could be heard, and my bed creaked as I sat up in it to remember why Katie was being so quiet.
Oh, yeah.
"Hey," I punched the mattress above me, and when I got no response, I laid back down to kick it with both feet. "Get up."
Connor groaned, but no further reply came from the top bunk.
"We've got like, fifteen minutes before we have to wake everyone up."
"Then we have fourteen more minutes to sleep!"
I scoffed at him before lifting myself up to get ready. It only took a moment to slip on a shirt and step into my shoes, because my regular morning routine had me regimented to be fast. So, within the two minutes I'd gotten out of bed, I was out the door.
Where to? My feet already knew before I did.
Maybe I had time to prank Katie before she woke up, if she hadn't already. I had my mental stash of last-minute practical jokes, and that could suffice.
The crunchy camp grass faded into lush green as I walked up to the Demeter cabin. The window to the counselor room in the back had... unfortunately... lost its lock months ago, so I easily unhinged it and slipped through.
I inspected the room the moment I landed softly on the other side. An arm was draped off the top bunk, signifying Miranda's presence, but Katie's bed was empty. That was weird. Maybe she was in the main room.
As I roamed into the next area of the cabin, I considered that I could've taken advantage of her not being in her room and placed the prank there. But I convinced myself that she was probably super prepared for it to be there, and I wanted to surprise her. I wanted to see the look on her face.
Sure, I still had no idea what the prank was going to be, but I digressed.
I sneaked past the sleeping Demeter kids with my godlike stealth, and still no sign of Katie. Even without seeing her, the idea of jump-scaring her became my new adrenaline. I could shock her that way, and maybe keep her paranoid by saying the prank was coming later in the day. Then I could figure out what I wanted to do, and at the same time keep her on the edge of her seat.
