. . .
"You know Katie likes you, right?"
I spoke the words seemingly out of the blue, but my idiot brother had to know it was coming.
The daughter of Demeter had my brother wrapped around her green thumb. Even now, as she walked by us in the pavilion, Travis stopped everything he was doing to gaze at her. He'd made some dry remark that I couldn't bother to hear, and she'd fired back some quip with a smile.
The usual.
"Um, what's the word for the farthest thing away from 'like'?" Travis responded, trying to appear busy by cramming a huge bite of barbecue into his mouth. "That's how she feels about me."
"She's got a huge crush on you, dude."
I used to have trouble believing he was blind enough not to see how much Katie liked him. It was painfully clear from the moment she stepped onto camp grounds, she was taken with him. Even I noticed. I freaking noticed someone crushing on my own brother!
But now, it was the norm.
Katie had sat down at her table at that point, but her eyes were still glued to our table. For a minute, I considered giving Travis bunny ears to see if she'd react, but I knew she'd just look away. She always turned away when she saw either of us looking, so it was a good thing I was the son of a sneaky god.
I faced by numbskull brother again to inspect him. It was almost like clockwork, how they took turns staring at each other and looking away just in time for the other to ogle them. Now, Travis was taking her in like she was Aphrodite or something, seemingly having forgotten our conversation.
So, I gleefully reminded him.
"Seriously, can't you see it?"
He fumbled to act like he was only sweeping his gaze around the pavilion, and stuttered when offering his latest lame excuse. "See what? Uh... I can't see anything."
"Apparently."
For a fellow son of the god of lies, he sure stunk at avoiding his crush on Katie.
"Look, she likes you, you like her. It's almost like..." I paused for dramatic effect, taking full pleasure in the blush spreading across his face. "You stoll her heart!"
I guess I deserved that shoulder punch.
Still, it was worth him squirming in his seat and sputtering out nonsense. Our other siblings heard my hilarious joke (which landed perfectly), and they joined in with puns of their own. Travis groaned and stood up to leave, to which we reacted by calling him a wuss and telling him to man up to his feelings.
Ah, I loved being the younger sibling.
True, Travis needed to face his emotions. Katie, too. They'd never get anywhere when they kept beating around the bush, pretending that they were enemies - they'd keep on being subjected to my amazing observances and flawless jokes.
However, I knew Travis was stubborn enough to wait until he was ready to admit it.
I made eye contact with Miranda from across the pavilion as Travis sauntered up to the Demeter table, picking at Katie. Both of them were laughing, but quickly covered it up with a new sarcastic remark.
I rolled my eyes at Miranda, and she returned the gesture.
We had to do something about this.
