"Oh hey Zon!" Saifah says surprised, "I didn't expect to see you here already."
"Oh yeah uh-" Zon shifts his gaze away from Saifah's, struggling to come up with an explanation, "well lunch just ended with Tutor so I thought I'd stop by?"
"Oh, well I was just heading out to grab something from a professor."
"Oh okay then," Zon turns to walk away.
"Wait!" Saifah calls, reaching out and grabbing Zon by the arm, "you don't have to leave, you can come with me. It should be quick." Saifah dropped Zon's arm, reaching up to grab the back of his neck and look down hesitantly, "I mean that is if you want.. You don't have to!"
"No no," Zon answered quickly, "I'll go with you".
---
The two walked into Saifah's room laughing uncontrollably. On the way back from picking up Saifah's papers, they decided to stop and grab some ice cream. Then, while walking back Zon had tripped, dropping his ice cream cone down the front of his shirt. Zon had been upset at first but had laughed it off as Saifah's laughter and wide smile was contagious.
"Here Zon, let me grab you an extra shirt," Saifah pulled a clean shirt out of his dresser, tossing it to Zon.
"Thanks," Zon turned his back to Saifah to pull his shirt, sticky with ice cream, over his head. As he took his shirt off he could hear Saifah's breath hitch and feel his eyes on him. Zon blushed, the tips of his ears turning pink. He quickly pulled Saifah's shirt over his head, inhaling his scent. The shirt was quite large on Zon, falling almost to his knees. Zon turned back around, gaze falling on Saifah's flushed face.
"So uh," Saifah started awkwardly, "I forgot to ask, are you going to stay the night or are you just here to practice or-" He trailed off looking down at Zon. Zon broke his eye contact with Saifah, shifting his feet nervously. It's now or never Zon. He thought in an attempt to psych himself up.
"Er I actually had something I've been meaning to talk to you about," Zon kept his gaze averted from Saifah's as he walked towards the couch to sit down.
"Did I do something wrong?" Saifah asks worriedly, concerned by his friend's anxious behavior.
"No, no, not at all!" Zon hurriedly assured looking up at Saifah again. "It's not like that at all. I actually-" He paused taking a deep breath before continuing, "I wanted to talk to you about soulmates."
Saifah stood there for a second, mouth agape as he took in Zon's nervous twitches and flushed face, refusing to meet Saifah's gaze. After a moment he took a seat next to Zon, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder in an attempt to calm him. Zon startled at the touch, but didn't shrug away.
"I've actually been meaning to talk to you about that too," Zon glanced up then, surprised by Saifah's words.
"You have?" Zon questioned, raising his eyebrows slightly. Saifah didn't say anything, he just reached his hand up to his left ear, brushing back his hair. With the hair out of the way, Saifah's soulmate mark was revealed to Zon. Zon's mouth fell open and he instinctively reached up to touch his own mark.
"But- we- what?" Zon struggled to form a sentence in his state of shock. Deep down he knew that there was a possibility that Saifah was his soulmate, he had just refused to accept the blatant facts until now.
"I've known since that moment a few weeks ago, when you forgot your hat and I was sitting next to you for guitar lessons," Saifah stated. Zon sat silently remembering that day. Saifah opened his mouth to continue but he was abruptly cut off by Zon.
"But if you have known for weeks and haven't said anything," Zon turned his head away from Saifah, placing his hands on his face in a state of distress. At this point he was talking more to himself than Saifah, "He must not want me. Oh my god. He probably already found someone and they are way better together despite not being soulmates."
"Zon-" Saifah interjected, but Zon just continued.
"That's why he ignored me. Why would he want a guy for a soulmate when he could just have one of the many girls fawning over him? Tutor was wrong, Tutor was so wrong," tears started to appear in the corner of Zon's eyes.
"Zon look at me," Saifah spoke sternly but his words had no effect on Zon.
"He's probably embarrassed by me. He just wanted to ignore it. Some people don't want their soulmates. What did I expect? I shouldn't have brought it up. He was ignoring it for a reason. Oh no no no no-" Zon was cut off by Saifah reaching up to grab Zon's face, gently forcing his head to face him.
"Zon I'm not embarrassed by you and I don't hate you," Saifah started to explain, but Zon's eyes remained downcast.
"But you still don't want me as your soulmate, it's okay I understand," Zon made a move to get up, avoiding Saifah's gaze.
"Zon!" Saifah exclaimed, slightly frustrating, shooting a hand out to grasp Zon's hand, holding him there.
"Zon, you didn't let me finish," He said calmly, "Zon look at me please". Zon turned his head slowly to face Saifah. He expected to find traces of disgust and displeasure in Saifah's facial expressions but instead he was met with those of vulnerability and concern, even a little of what appeared to be care.
"As I was saying before you interrupted me with your rant," Saifah started with a slight smile. He squeezed Zon's hand tighter, reaching his other hand up to brush the tears off Zon's cheeks with his thumb. "Zon," He paused searching Zon's eyes, "I do want you. You are funny, and smart, and handsome, but very cute," Saifah winked, "you make me smile, and honestly, I think you would be a great soulmate and would make me very happy." Saifah studied Zon's reaction, noticing the shorter's eyes widen in shock before a small smile started to form on his face.
"Really?"
"Really." There was no doubt in Saifah's voice. At this Zon's smile widened and he lunged towards Saifah, falling into his lap and throwing his arms around him. Saifah sat there in shock, surprised by the reaction, before he too then wrapped his arms around Zon. They sat there for a moment, enjoying the comfort of the others embrace. Zon then pulled away slightly, remaining in Saifah's lap, looking up at him.
"So then, why did you wait so long to tell me if you weren't embarrassed?" Zon questioned. Saifah blushed slightly at this.
"Honestly, I was scared that you wouldn't want me. You always wore that hat so I thought you were hiding the mark from me on purpose. And I didn't want to scare you away," Saifah replied thoughtfully, still slightly flushed.
"Aww, you're so cute when you blush," Zon reached up and poked Saifah on the nose, smiling. Siafah laughed at that shoving Zon lightly.
"Er anyways," Zon looked slightly nervous again, "What are we?"
"Well," Saifah considered, taking in Zon's nervous emotions, "We don't have to force anything right now. We could continue hanging out and getting closer without the pressure of a relationship. We don't have to do anything you don't feel ready for," He assured. "And then we can just see where that takes us and go from there."
Zon thought that over, "So like friends who are actually soulmates, who might have feelings for eachother, hanging out platonically?" Zon clarified.
"Platonically for now," Saifah winked. Zon blushed, pushing Saifah, but unable to hide his smile at the statement.
"I like that," Zon smiled up at Saifah.
"Me too".
Zon fell asleep cuddled up next to Saifah, his face buried in the crook of his neck, arm draped across his chest. He felt an overwhelming sense of comfort, safety and most of all happiness.
