Chapter 5
Ethan's POV
The sound of my alarm wakes me up early Monday morning. I take a quick shower and put on my basketball clothes. I grab a random shirt from my closet, a pair of dark jeans, and a pair of shoes to change into after practice, and shove them into my bag. I run downstairs, grab a piece of toast and my keys, and run out the door.
Practice only lasts an hour, and coach lets us out to the showers. I take another shower, and get dressed.
I was outside the locker room waiting for my friend, Mason, when Christian walks up to me.
"Hey man, can I talk to you about something," says Christian.
"Yeah, sure," I say.
"You and Lauren broke up, right?" I just nod in response.
"Does that mean you and Everest are together, or what?" He asks.
"I don't know," I tell him truthfully. Christian just nods and looks down.
Finally, Mason walks out of the locker room. I look at Christian, nod, and walk away. Mason and I walk to the front of the school where the our group of friends always are before school starts.
Mason, Cole, and I were talking about the Playoff game that was coming up next week, when Hannah and Everest walk up to us. She practically jumps on me, and engulfs me in a hug. I laugh and pull her closer. She looks up at me, and I can't help but notice that she's not wearing her glasses today.
"Where are your glasses?" My voice is so low that only she hears me. She just rolls her eyes, and rests her head against my chest.
After a minute or two, the bell rings. She groans, grabs my hand, and leads us to our first class of the day.
She lets go of my hand and sits in the chair beside me. She immediately pulls out her textbooks and begins to take notes. I just tap my pencil against my desk and wait for Mr. Derrik to show up. A few minutes later, Mr. Derrik walks into the classroom with a girl I've never seen before trailing behind him.
"Hello class, today we are having a new student. Her name is Alison, and she is to be welcomed by each and every one of you. Alison, you may sit where ever you'd like," says Mr. Derrik.
"You can call me Ali," she says quietly. She's pretty. She has long brown hair. The same length as Everest's, but this girl's hair is really straight and a lighter shade of brown.
She looks around the room, but stops and stares at me. I just nod and look at Everest. Everest looks between me and the Ali girl, and rolls her eyes. Ev studies the new girl as she walks towards me.
"Hi, I'm Ali," the girl says as she offers her hand out for me to shake.
I awkwardly shake her hand. "I'm Ethan."
"Nice to meet you, Ethan. I was just wondering if the seat behind you was taken," she says waving her hand nonchalantly towards the desk behind me. I glance at the empty desk.
"It's all yours," I tell her with a shrug. She smiles, and walks to the desk behind me.
Throughout class, the girl attempts to ask Everest questions, and Ev just gives her short answers. The girl doesn't seem to get the point.
"So, your name is Everest? That's a really cool name. Do your parents like Mountains? My parents are boring, I've always wanted a unique name." Everest just groans and rolls her eyes, which makes me laugh. She glances at me, and the corners of her mouth go upward.
