Beth's POV

That day at lunch, I'm anxious about this new project. How do these things work? How are we supposed to work on them in partners? Will we have time in class?

When I spot Connor at the table we were sitting at yesterday, a crazy flashback goes through my head.

"I don't know if I can do this," whispered a girl. "I've never done it before."

The boy smiled. "Just come closer and don't be afraid."

I came back to the present and the scene fades quickly. I couldn't even see the faces, I could only hear the words. Who were those people? I shake my head and sit beside Livia at our table.

"Hi, guys." I look around. "Val?"

"Oh, he's at the library looking for some books on French." She snorts. "He really wants a good grade in that class."

I smile. "That's a good thing."

I notice that I haven't had any random voices enter my head today. Hm.

Connor's POV

I watch as Beth sits at the table and starts chatting with Livia. I smile to myself as she laughs. She doesn't even know how beautiful she is.

Cass lays her head on my shoulder and sighs.

"I'm not hungry."

"Then don't eat." I shrug, making her head bounce up.

She giggles.

Suddenly, I see an attractive older guy, about eighteen or nineteen walk up to Beth and tap her on the shoulder. She looks up and looks surprised.

"Adam?" she says. "What are you doing here?"

Oh. She knows him.

"Thought I'd come by and surprise you. I haven't gotten to spend time with you lately," he says as he slides in the table on the opposite side of Beth.

She shakes her head but smiles. "You say that a lot. But really? In front of my friends?"

He looks up at us as if realizing we were here for the first time. I notice that he was the guy that picked Beth up after school yesterday. I eye his arm, which is wrapped around Beth's shoulders.

"Well, you haven't introduced me yet," he says in casual reply.

I look at Livia and she smiles sharply. I can tell she dislikes this Adam guy as much as I do.

"Oh, okay," Beth says shyly. She looks at us and gestures toward Liv. "That's Livia."

Livia gives him a nod.

Then Beth looks at Cass. "And Cass." I glance at Cass and realize for the first time that she's staring at Adam dreamily. Um.

Then, Beth gestures towards me. "And this is Franta."

I give him a half wave. Adam looks at me and seems to realize something. He looks at Beth and whispers something in her ear. She nods and he furrows his eyebrows as she looks at him in confusion.

"Well," Adam says. He looks at Beth. "As nice as it was to meet you all, I have to go. Beth, I'll pick you up today, alright?"

She nods.

And then, I swear I almost flip the table over. Because Adam turns Beth's face softly to meet his and he kisses her.

And Beth closes her eyes and kisses back. I cringe and look away, hoping no one saw me.

When I turn back, Beth pulls away and her cheeks turn into a blush pink.

"Adam!"

He smirks. "See you later."

I try to act normally and pick up my Coke, silently praying my face isn't red. He's a friend, right? Maybe that was his douchey way of saying he liked her.

I can almost feel Cass's look of shock before I hear her speak.

"I thought he was a friend!" she exclaims.

Beth blushes harder. "He is. Also technically my boyfriend."

I literally choke on my Coke. Livia looks at me strangely.

Beth is still looking at Cass. "Why do you care so much?"

Cass looks at me and then at the floor. "Just confused, is all."

"Just confused," Livia echoes, making me scoot farther away from Cass. Liv smirks. "Right."
