Connor
As I pull up to the record store, I can't help but smile. This is my favorite place. Beth and I used to come here all the time. Of course, Cass doesn't know that.
I put the car in park and jump out, and I lock it with a push of a button. I hear Cassia's quiet footsteps behind me. I look back. Cass looks really pretty today. She's wearing a bright yellow sundress and her hair is in loose curls.
I reach the store and hold the door open for Cass. She walks inside and I close the door behind me. I immediately go into the pop rock section. My favorite. Plus, this section is the biggest. I look around. Only a couple other people are here.
Cass heads over to the country music. I will never understand her. I find a new record, Ed Sheeran's X. The tag says 24.99. I shrug my shoulders and continue skimming, keeping it in my hands. The bell of the door jingles, but I don't pay attention to it.
Someone appears near me, also browsing pop rock. I glance up just to see the person, and then I glance back down. Thought it was Cass. But then I realize something and I look up again.
"Beth?"
She looks up. "Connor?"
"Wow, didn't think I'd find you here," I say, surprised.
She blushes. "I love it here. It's far, but I like to come often. I came here a lot when I was a kid."
She doesn't remember. "Did you come with anyone?" I ask. Just to see if she'll say something.
But instead, she shakes her head slightly. "Did you come when you were younger?"
I just give her a small nod. "So, what music are you looking for?"
"Mmm... I don't know. Just browsing, I guess." She nods to my hands. "What do you have?"
I hold it up so she can see. She smiles. "I'm borrowing that one."
"Of course," I say, smiling back. Someone appears on my other side. Cass.
"Oh. It's you," she says when she sees Beth, in the most disappointing voice ever. She glances at me. "Are you gonna pay for that? We should go."
"Uh, yeah. Wait a second, okay Cassia? Meet you at the car."
She glares at Beth and walks out the store.
"Okay," Beth says. "I should probably let you go ahead then. Don't want her to get any more angry."
"Wait, Beth," I say, realizing something. "Are you here alone?"
"Oh," she says, putting her head down and keeping her eyes on the racks. "I was out with Adam, but he had to go somewhere."
"And he just left you here? Who would do--
"His sister's in labor. He wanted me to come here, since we drove so far."
I fall silent. "Oh."
She nods at me. "Go pay for that before your girlfriend erupts." She smirks at me.
I walk closer to her and nudge her with my shoulder. "You need a ride."
"Adam gave me money for a taxi."
I look at her. "You'd rather take a taxi?"
"I don't want to interrupt your date."
"It's barely a date. Just dinner. I was the one who wanted to come out here, not Cass."
She looks at me. "I couldn't possibly--
"Come on, Beth. It's no big deal. Really." I grab her hand and pull her to the cash register. I quickly pay for my record and pull Beth to my car. And I swear Cass literally explodes.
"Oh, so now this is a threesome date?" she asks, face red. "Where are you taking her? To the movies? To Star's so you can win her a stuffed animal? To your house? Why are you holding her hand?"
"Cass!" I say, hoping Beth can't see the blush on my face. I let go of Beth's hand. "She needs a ride, okay? To her house."
"No, I can take a taxi," Beth tries. I look at her.
"You don't have to."
"Just let her take the damn taxi!" Cass shouts.
But I tell Beth to sit in the backseat of my car. She reluctantly agrees and Cass crosses her arms.
"Whatever."
