Beth
The next day, I walk into homeroom and look around. I don't see Connor, but Cass is there, dangling her legs on the edge of the desk. She looks at me and almost scowls.
"Nice to see you, too Cass," I say.
She glares at me. "Listen," she says quietly. I get closer to hear. "I know you and Connor used to be like besties or whatever, but I don't want you to interfere. He doesn't want you to hurt him again, alright?"
"What?" I say in disbelief. "How is it my fault? I didn't even know what I was doing back then."
"Yeah, well he still hasn't recovered. And he's obviously moved on--
"Moved on? What do you mean by that?"
"Um." She looks away. "Never mind. I'm just saying that you probably should just leave him alone. He doesn't need another problem."
"Didn't realize I was such a big problem," I mutter, sitting in a seat a few rows back.
Connor enters the classroom just as the bell rings, and Mr. Jensen is on his heels. Connor turns to him and smiles. Mr. Jensen shakes his head in exasperation but gestures for Con to sit down. He sits by me again, probably because Heather is sitting by Cass.
He gives me a half smile and a small nod as he slides into his seat. It reminds me of the first day, when I thought he was attractive. I blush to myself. He is attractive. Then I remember what he thought, that same day. She's cute. But he didn't know who I was either.
"So!" Mr. Jensen exclaims. "I'm very excited to tell you all what your partner assignments are for the big Romeo and Juliet project."
The class gives a collective groan.
"And I tried to match you so that it would be a little less... awkward... in the way where you will not be paired with a complete stranger, although these were based off of my unruly observations and sometimes the seating chart."
I notice Cass look at Connor, and Connor smiling at her. It makes me look around. I don't know any other guy here. Except the guy in the corner with the pretty eyes and gorgeous jawline. He asked me for my number in the halls yesterday. I didn't give it to him, but still. He sees me staring and I look away quickly, blushing.
Mr. Jensen starts listing the pairs. The guy that asked for my number gets paired with Heather. I don't even have time to be confused before Mr. Jensen says my name.
"Bethany Mota, you are paired with Connor Franta."
My eyes widen. I'm paired with Connor? His damn unruly observations.
I'm afraid to look at Connor. Instead, I look at Cass, which also wasn't a good idea. She looks like she wants to strangle me. I wish Adam were here.
Cass gets paired with Jack.
