I finished cleaning the makeup off of my face as the door bell rang. I looked up into the mirror and saw an enormous grin on my face. I looked out the hall window as I half-ran half-skipped down the hallway to greet him at the door. As I opened the door, I saw through the glass panel that Parker was not himself, and that he had brought the sugar.
I pulled him into my arms as he dropped the bag of sugar on the entry floor, "You look like you need a break." I laughed and hugged him tighter.
"I really do," He hugged me tighter, rubbing my back and warming it up in the process, "And there isn't anyone else in the world I would rather spend it in."
I shivered and let go of him, puling him by the hand into the kitchen. I decided to check on the french toast seeing as I already had some on the griddle. Some of the pieces had already finished cooking, so we were able to get everything else ready to eat.
"Addi, this looks really good," He said as he pulled out a chair for me to sit on.
"Well, you brought the powdered sugar, so you've contributed. So thanks for helping!" I laughed.
"But you did most of the work, so you should get all the credit." he smiled as he spoke.
"Well, let's eat!" I laughed as I started to eat. --------------------------------------------------
"So what's wrong?" I asked as we walked over to the couch to snuggle.
"Well," he said as he put his arms around me and took a deep breath, "My dad has been cheating on my mom."
I took a short breath in as I processed what he had just told me. I looked up at him to see a very little amount of tears in his mesmerizing eyes on the verge of falling.
"Oh, Parker..." I paused trying to find the right words, "When did you find out?"
"Well," Parker paused, probably trying to gather his thought about what he was going to explain, "I guess everything started about a month ago, I mean, my parents have been married for 30 years, and I'm sure they were in a bit of a marital slump, but I never thought either one of them would have an affair. My dad must have gotten so bored with their relationship and I don't know. He cheated, Addison. He cheated. On my mom." The tears in his eyes finally fell and I wiped them away, "He did it twice. And my mom didn't even care. She took him back twice. How could she, I don't understand it. I can understand taking him back once, but twice?"
"Parker, I..." I sigh, not knowing what to say, or how to say it. "She loves him. Your mom fell for your dad and knows he loves her. She probably knows that sticking it out and working through the problems and the hard things is better for you and your siblings than them splitting up would be. He's your dad Parker, you still love him, maybe not right now in this moment.. but deep down, maybe way deep down, you still do." I added a half smile, the kind I do when things seem grim.
"How do you do that?" he smiled and hugged me tighter.
"What did I do?" Was there something I did out of the ordinary? I did what seemed like the right thing to do in that kind of moment.
"Make everything seem okay when it seems like it isn't. I don't know what I would do without you." He grinned.
"I'm just a girl. I said what seemed to fit and it sounds like it did what I wanted it to." I shrugged off his comment.
"You're amazing. You're not just a girl'. You're adorable. You're funny. You are beautiful, you're all a guy could hope for." I had to chuckle at how cheesy he was getting. "I'm sorry, that was a little cheesy, right? I'm guessing it was from your laugh."
