It was a couple of days after Casey's birthday and she was back at work. She was currently running some samples she had just collected to the lab when her pager beeped and scared her. Looking at it she quickened her pace to a light jog to get to the lab quicker and then bolted to the nearest elevator. She lunged inside and pressed the button for the 7th floor and anxiously waited, as it hoisted her to the floor. When she stepped out Ethan and Baz were there waiting for her. "Rookie. Follow us." Ethan spoke professionally and led both Baz and Casey to the teams base room and quickly started pinning things to the board. "Casey, what's you're about to hear might be hard to take in but please try to remain professional and raise your left arm if you need to take a time out." Ethan explained. "Just tell me Dr. Ramsey. What's wrong with my brother?" she demanded as she reached out to Baz who gave her a small sad smile and held her hand supportively. What felt like five minutes of silence passed as Ethan told her the ins and outs of the tests that had been run, but what brought her back into the moment were his final words, "....Casey, I take no pleasure in saying this but Your brother... he. God.. Casey, he has testicular cancer. Stage 3, testicular cancer." Ethan told her and her whole world felt like it had stopped, her grip had tightened on Baz's hand so much that his knuckles were white but Baz being the supportive friend and colleague he is, didn't flinch or say a word. "You're lying. A test result must have come out wrong. Or we gave the wrong sample to the wrong people. We must have messed up somewhere. We'll take more samples, test them again. Then we'll g-" she rambled frantically as she rose to her feet, heading to the door but Ethan blocked her off. "Casey, the test's aren't wrong. I've read them over multiple times. I-I'm sorry but your brother-" Ethan said tenderly "NO! NO YOU'VE GOT THIS ALL WRONG ETHAN! HE DOESN'T HAVE CANCER!" she screamed at his face as she punched his chest and tried to get past him, but he hugged her, pinning her arms at her side no matter how much she thrashed trying to escape "shhhh Casey, please. It's okay to be upset but calm down please. ... Baz can you make a hot chocolate please and grab her a sugar cookie and cheese topped roll with butter from the canteen." Ethan said as he struggled with Casey in his arms trying to calm her down, "On it." Said Baz and he rushed out of the room. It took a few minutes, but Casey finally fell limp in Ethan's arms a sobbing mess. "H-he c-c-caannnn'tt. I can't lose him. He-" she sobbed as Ethan lead her over to the cushioned window couch, sitting with her and passing her some tissues. She blew her nose and hiccupped out a few more sobs. Whilst they waited for Baz to come back Ethan poured Casey a glass of water and handed it to her, taking the seat next to her and placing a gentle soothing hand on her arm. Out of all the families he had to tell their loved ones had cancer, he had never felt his heart sink this much at a reaction. Why was this? he asked himself, why did his heart hurt so much seeing this family member broken over all the other's he had told over his past few years in the profession? Was it because Casey's a colleague and a friend? No, he knew what it was. He hated to admit it but... he had feelings for the woman sitting in front of him. She was a mess now, mascara down her face and her foundation patchy from the tears, but to him she was a beautiful mess. As she took another sip of water, Ethan's attention was drawn to a jingle coming from her wrist, a smile appearing on his face as he noticed the little fox charm dangling from her bracelet that he had gifted her a couple of days ago. "You added it so soon?" he questioned as he pointed to her wrist, trying to distract her mind for a moment. She looked down and then looked back up at him with a small smile. "Of course. Why wouldn't I?" she asked, causing him to shrug as he blushed bashfully. "You mean a lot to me Ethan. Our relationship means a lot to me. I love the moments we get to spend together. Your smile is beautiful, and you have the most joyful yet infectious laugh. Everyday I get to see you is a good day. When you're away, I find it hard to focus as I wonder if you're okay or if you're stressed out in a meeting somewhere. The feelings I have for you Ethan.... they run deeper than a friendship, but I don't want to force anything more onto you, when-" she was saying when he spoke up cutting her off. "I want it." Is all he said confidently as he looked her in the eyes with the deepest look of endearment she had ever seen any man give her, besides her father. "Whatever it is you want Casey. I want it too. I'd be a fool to let you slip out of my fingers." He continued on. Casey stared at him mouth agape but quickly closed it when Baz shouted from the other side of the door "UHHHH, My hands are full! Could someone open this door for me please!" Ethan and Casey chuckled lightly before he got up shaking his head and crossing to the door, opening it for Baz who walked in with a box and a cupholder of drinks. "Baz, I only told you to-" Ethan started but was quickly cut off. "uh uh uh! When one eats in sorrow, their friends eat in sorrow with them. Now, let's all sit for 5 minutes and enjoy these cupcakes I got. I also got you your sugar cookie and cheese topped roll with butter Casey don't you worry." Baz stated. "Baz we can't really afford to take this time-" Casey spoke up as she looked at Ethan with uncertainty. After a minute Ethan sighed, "We can have one cake. But then It's back to work." He said sternly but with soft look as his gaze drifted across the room to Casey, inviting her to sit at the table with a nod of his head. She made her way over and took a seat, Ethan and Baz sitting on either side of her. As they ate their cake, Ethan went over the scan results that had shown and 100% confirmed her brother's cancer. It was hard for her to swallow. She knew her brother was stubborn and hated seeing doctors but... the pain he must be feeling. "Would.. you excuse me a moment" Casey said as she got up and left the room. Baz looked at Ethan, "should we-" Baz started to ask but Ethan just shook his head. "Let her go. She'll come back in a few moments." Ethan said softly as he watched the door shut and Casey disappear down the corridors towards her brothers room.
