It was the first day of senior year and the campus of Duke university was bustling with activity as students made their ways to their first lesson of the day. Amongst the thousands of students were 3 people who had stuck together since they were kids, they chatted excitedly as they headed towards class.
"So, Naveen.. you still haven't told us what you, done over your break.
"Because there is nothing to tell."
"Come on! You must have done something. Ethan studied and I went on a short road trip with my family. There must have been something you, done outside of meet us last week."
"Not really."
"WOW. He's more boring than me!"
"You're not boring Ethan."
The three chuckled as they turned into class, taking three seats at the back. As usual, Ethan sat in the middle and they set their things up on the desk, silencing their phones before putting them in their bags. That was the thing with these 3. They were rebellious in some ways, but they always followed the rules in school about phones. As their lesson dragged on Casey and Naveen started losing concentration, so they started passing notes back and forth behind Ethan's chair, looking at each other and suppressing their laughter by raising eyebrows at each other. The teacher caught them this time though, and it was Naveen's fault for snorting loudly at Casey's response.
"Naveen Banerji and Casey Valentine! Something.. you would like to share with the class. Perhaps?"
"No ma'am. Sorry ma'am." They said in unison as they flushed bright red. Casey lent down to pick up her pen as she dropped it from getting startled when the teacher shouted their names, Ethan between them, subtly shaking his head as he tried not to laugh at his friends for getting into trouble not even halfway into the first day of senior year. The bell ringing to signal the end of this class couldn't have come soon enough, Casey packing her things away in a rush and bolting out of the door and towards the girls bathroom. As Naveen walked the hallways, Ethan sighed beside him, muttering something under his breath with a deep frown etched onto his face.
"What's wrong?"
"Huh? Oh, nothing.."
"I know that look on your face. Something's bothering you."
".... Okay.. I'll tell you. But you can't tell anyone about this. Especially the person I'm about to mention."
Ethan looked around and then moved closer to his friend, pulling him aside to whisper in his ear.
"I kinda like Casey."
"Kinda? Coulda fooled me." Naveen said with a raised brow
"Okay fine. I like her. Super like her. But she can't know! I don't think she feels the same and I'd rather not have to fear rejection of hearing those words and potentially ruining our friendship."
"I'm not keeping this a secret from her. Are you crazy?"
"Naveen, please" Ethan pleaded
"Fine. But you owe me a lunch for this."
"Whatever. Look just please don't tell her, that's the worst that could happen."
"Like I said. I'll keep your secret, but you owe me a lunch."
"Thank you, Naveen."
As the weeks passed by, Ethan told Naveen everything he liked about Casey when she wasn't around, asking for advice on what he should do. Of course Naveen's response was always just to ask her on a date, but Ethan was far too nervous for that. One afternoon they were gathered in the campus library, studying for an upcoming test when Ethan excused himself to use the bathroom. As soon as he was gone Casey let out a deep exhale that she wasn't aware she had been holding in, causing Naveen to frown at her.
