Chapter 15

The house was holding its breath. As with every close knit family by the midday meal, everyone knew that Geralt was proposing today. The conversation around the meal was full of excitement. Jolna especially probed Tobias for information as they sat and ate. "Do you think she'll say yes Tobias? They seem so suited to each other and Ciri even said to me that she has never seen her dad so happy" it seemed that the table silenced at this question, everyone waiting to hear what Tobias had to say. Taking a mouthful of Nessie's tasty pea and ham soup he mulled over how to direct this conversation. "I know you're all excited. I am too at the prospect of Julia being happy again. It will be her decision though and no matter what she decides I want you all to respect that. Now you all have work to do so enough idle gossip. We will be told soon enough" He eyed each man and woman sitting at the table to make sure they understood.

The day had progressed slowly, and now after the healing rooms had closed Tobias and Ciri were in the garden working on his sword-fighting skills. Renee was sitting in the shade watching, when she saw a lone couple walking towards them from the stables. Her stomach fluttered in preparation for their news. Presuming by their slow comfortable walk arm in arm that the day was not a complete disaster. The closer they got the happier Renee felt as she saw a peaceful smile on Julia's face and Geralt was beaming. Ciri saw them and stopped the swordplay as they walked into the middle of the group. A soft smile on her face Julia beckoned Ciri to come speak with them.

Julia looked at Ciri for a moment she was sweaty from her training with Tobias, her flaxen hair stuck to her face which held a questioning look. She was unaware of the conversation Geralt had with Ciri earlier, and was slightly nervous but knew that she needed to ask the girl. So, with a deep breath Julia said "Ciri what would you say if your dad and I got married? would you be ok with that?" Ciri squealed and threw herself at Julia hugging her fiercely around the middle. Laughing, all nervousness errased by Ciri's joy she stated "I guess that's an affirmative answer" Julia looked over the top of Ciri's head at Geralt and smiled. At the reaction from Ciri, both Tobias and Renee walked over to the trio. Julia gave both Tobias and Renee a scowling face and said in a disapproving tone "you could have warned me this morning. You knew didn't you." She then smiled at her family who were completely unapologetic for their behavior.

The group was laughing as they headed into the dining room that night. As the rest of the household waited with anticipation. They took their seats and waited until Nessie had served everyone and sat. Julia stood at this point and with a hand on Geralt's shoulder cleared her throat "Before you start eating, I have an announcement." The room went silent as everyone watched and listened. "I know the last few years have not been easy around here. There is uncertainty with the war raging, and I know we are making plans to be ready if we need to leave. However, something special happened today. Something that I hope will brighten not only my life but yours as well. After much discussion, Geralt asked me to marry him and I agreed."

At this announcement, the table erupted into cheers, Julia was overwhelmed by the warmth and love she was being shown. Geralt seeing his beloved overwhelmed stood and motioned for the table to be quiet. Pulling Julia to his side he spoke on her behalf "We know that normally a wedding would take months to plan and organize but with the war so close we felt it would be prudent to instead have it quickly. So, with all your help we would like it to happen in 5 days' time." He could see the shocked looks on everyone's faces especially Nessie, Hannah, and Ruth's faces. They knew what went into preparing a wedding and already he could see them calculating what needed to be done.
