Zhao Xing thought she'd definitely die. Her legs were numb as her body fell from the cliff, and straight into an endless abyss.
At that moment, the young lady closed her eyes and silently prayed to the heavens above. Maybe this was the end of her journey in the ancient dynasty, and now it was time for her to go home... or truly die. Even though she hasn't finished her mission to protect the general, at least she tried her best.
But it seemed like she wasn't fated to stay beside him...
After all, every human was only a pawn in the hands of the goddess of fate. When they finished their roles, they would be called back home. Even if she desperately wanted to stay in this world, beside the general, she couldn't do anything.
What kind of power did a mere mortal woman like her have?
She couldn't go against fate.
When Zhao Xing thought her body would hit water or the harsh rocks, a pair of iron-like arms wrapped themselves around her waist. Instantly, her body was brought into a familiar, warm embrace.
"Zhao Xing, I'm here with you now. Don't be scared, don't be scared...."
Gao Chang Gong tightly enveloped her body, as though he was afraid he would lose her and wouldn't be able to see her again. Those sentences were more of a self-reminder for him. He was reassuring himself that as long as she was in his arms, he would be at peace.
The male's delicate and affectionate murmur was the last thing Zhao Xing heard before her body fell into the deep waters.
The collision with the river's surface struck her body sharply, and caused her to suffocate. The cold water began to assault her nose and mouth, and she accidentally choked on, almost gagging for air. She expected her ribs would definitely break into pieces, but she didn't felt any pain except for her lungs being filled with water.
What Zhao Xing didn't know was that as soon as she fell from the cliff, Gao Chang Gong caught her body, mustered out his remaining strength and internal energy, before utilizing his qinggong skill to suppress gravitation. Hence, when both of them fell down and collided with the water's surface, the clash wouldn't be too severe and harm their bodies.
The girl tried hard to open her eyes and looked for the man's body which already detached from hers. Flipping around the water, she peeled through the dark and managed to find a muddle crimson color floating.
Just before Gao Chang Gong sank deeper, being swept away by the heavy water stream, Zhao Xing reached forward and snatched his hands as she tried her best to swim into the river bank. She was silently grateful the assassin's needle only made her legs numb for a few moments. If not, she wouldn't have the strength to do anything.
She might not have the ability to save him.
"Cough, cough, cough!"
After managing to save herself and the general from drowning, and swimming to the riverside with great effort, the pitiful transmigrator panted hard and coughed up some water she swallowed.
She collapsed onto the solid ground, flipping her hair up to get a closer look at Gao Chang Gong. As her lungs burned, she weakly grabbed hold of the man's shoulders and dragged the both of them away from the waters.
Sitting at the humid, grassy area of the river bank, she patted her stuffy chest a few more times before she suddenly lurched forward and backed up even more water.
After that, when she realized they were no longer being chased by those assassins, the girl quietly uttered some gratitude prayers to the Jade Emperor for his generosity to help her avoid the gates of hell.
