Luna wiped her sweaty forehead as she walked towards the oven. She drew the tray of freshly baked bread, taking a good opportunity to smell its aroma before bringing them behind the counter and placing them in one of the containers.

"Luna, could you please tend to the customer?" Her boss requested as she was about to head inside.

"Sure thing," Luna said.

Her boss left and Luna waited for the customer to gather her money, watching her as she put it on the counter. "Thank you, come again." The customer left off.

"Excuse me." The voice sounded manly. Luna looked at the next customer - an angel in full army uniform. "Is the requested order ready?"

Luna scrambled inside and fetched a basket that her boss said was pre-made for the army. She got back out and handed it to the soldier.

"Thank you, girl." He opened the basket and smelled the mouth-watering scent. "We're going to need more of these tomorrow. So tell that to your boss."

"I will, Captain," she replied.

The captain walked away and Luna found herself waiting again for the next customer. When one came, she would serve them kindly offering them the goods of their desire, collecting the payment and handing the change. As the day went by, there were fewer and fewer customers to tend to, and by sunset the bakery was ready to close for the day.

Luna was summoned inside to receive her payment for the day's toil. But that day, her boss gave her something extra - a basket of leftover bread. Luna thanked her boss and went back home to the orphanage, where she had always belonged.

"I'm home," she announced as she went through the front door.

The other girls were busy doing their own business. The twins were playing with their dolls, Elara was helping Europa cook in the kitchen, Amalthea was reading a book, and the youngest of them was nowhere to be found.

"Did anyone miss me?" she asked. "Guess what, my boss gave me something extra today." She put the basket on the table.

"How's the day, Luna?" Europa asked when she emerged from the kitchen.

"Just like any other day," Luna replied. "Come on, everyone. It's dinner time."

The girls abandoned whatever they were doing to gather at the table. Elara came from the kitchen bringing some bowls of soup she had prepared along with Europa. She distributed it on the table and once the smell reached Luna's nose, she came to realize just how hungry she was. She had been working hard to support herself and the girls under Europa's care. As the eldest, Europa relied on her most.

"Do you think I'll make a good addition to the Resistance?" Elara asked.

"What? You wanna join the Resistance?" Luna doubted.

"Better than you. You're scared of Demons," Amalthea said.

The table of girls chuckled. Luna was afraid of Demons. She personally felt lucky that Eldham fell under the jurisdiction of the angels and not the demons. Had it been the other way around, she wasn't even sure if she dared step out of the orphanage.

"Hey enough," Europa intervened. "As much as Luna is afraid of demons, she's still living with us, and we should take care of her."

"But what if the demons invade north?" another girl asked.

"That's very unlikely," Europa said calmly. "Three years, and none of that has ever happened."

The girls continued to chat throughout dinner time about their daily lives. Elara mentioned how she met a boy, and about her first kiss by sunset that day which Luna thought was ridiculous. After all she was only fourteen, a couple of years younger than herself.

When they were finished, it was Amalthea's turn to do the dishes. While the other girls went back to their rooms, Luna had to tuck the youngest one in before she could settle in to her room for some good night's sleep.
