The house was a large two-story with a built in drive way along with a cement staircase that led to the front porch. It looked like a mansion to Phoenix, especially since it was so distanced from the other houses in the neighborhood it stood in.
They stood before the large front door; the sun shining through the stained glass that subtly windowed the top of the door as an accent. Autumn found herself jealous of their door, and of their home already.
She knocked a few times, straightening out her brown turtle neck and hoping her somewhat fitted jeans looked decent enough to age her a few years. She was always the 'young mom' compared to the families Phoenix knew, and along with speculation came the truth. A truth she wasn't exactly ashamed of, but wary of confessing as it only brought a different side of people. Like Brenda, of course.
Autumn really didn't want to meet another Brenda.
"Samuel, we got guests!" A deep and feminine voice sounded muffled from the other side of the door.
When the door swung open, Autumn almost gasped at how beautiful she was. Her ebony skin flawless at first glance, her hair a mass of small box braids wrapped up in a sophisticated bun, accentuating her chiseled face. Her onyx eyes met Autumn's with a smile, and she stepped back. "You must be Phoenix?" She said to the blonde boy at Autumn's side.
"Hi! Nice to meet you!" Phoenix smiled excitedly, reaching out a hand while the woman took it as quick as he offered it.
Autumn stepped inside and looked up at the woman beside her. She was tall, and her heels only made her tower over Autumn, her snug dress pants outlining her slim figure up to her waist, where she wore a green halter top under a red and beige sports jacket.
"Zeki, you have a friend!" The woman called, her voice booming throughout the house. She looked to Autumn and Phoenix and gestured to their coats, "I'll take those and hang them up for you.",
They shed their coats and Autumn took in the house for a moment and noticed the wide shiny stair case that stood before the doorway, the white railing of the stairs spotless and sparkling just like their marbled floors. Autumn didn't even know they made houses like that in Fridaville.
"I'm Saada by the way." She held her bony hand out to Autumn, who took it almost timidly. "Sorry it's a bit of a mess today, Zeki went through all his toys as if he wasn't getting anymore today." She chuckled with embarrassment, her East African accent adding onto her charm.
"No, it's no problem, your house it beautiful," Autumn said, especially fascinated by the idea of their house as 'messy' when it appeared to be completely spotless to her.
"Thank you, honey. What was your name?"
"Autumn."
"Autumn," Saada repeated with a smile. "Thank you so much for coming. Zeki worried he wouldn't have anybody come since he's new, but he told me this morning if Phoenix was the only one to show up he'd be the happiest eight-year-old alive."
Autumn laughed, "That's so sweet, Phoenix has been talking about him for weeks. I'm so glad I finally get to him."
"I know what you mean, all I've been hearing about lately is Phoenix. He's a very sweet boy. It's been hard for Zeki starting over in a new place, but hearing he already has a best friend makes me feel much better about being here."
